Covers

This week, our blog post is about covers and it is twofold. What are covers? Covers are recordings of music, usually vocal, by artists or performers who did not originally write or record the music. We see them all the time on YouTube in particular and in karaoke bars, but they are seen in other places both live and recorded. This is important because as we prepare for POPS Concert, the majority of the music is all covers.

Part 1: This part of your assignment this week is to find a cover of a song that you like. Post one paragraph (about 5 complete sentences) about the song, why you like it, who it is by, and specific musical elements that make the song a good choice to cover. Examples of good musical sentences are "I enjoy this song because it has a good rhythmic beat accented by the singer's vocal melismas" or "The piano part has a lot of higher notes that sound like bells which add to the whimsy of the song". You cannot use the sample sentences in your post. Examples of poorly worded/poor sentences are "I like the song because it is fast" or "I like the song because I like it". Be precise in your wording.

Part 2: Using your smartphone or any app that allows you to record, record yourself singing a cover of a song that you like. It can be a cappella or with accompaniment. Free apps like the YouTube app on most phones allows you to record and upload to YouTube. All videos must be uploaded to YouTube. The minimum time that your video must be is 1'30" and that does not include any speaking you do before singing. Record an entire song or one verse and a chorus. We will go over how to do this in class on Monday and Tuesday. When recording please make sure that you choose to make your video unlisted and include the link provided to you on YouTube to the video at the end of your post.

All posts are due by Friday, September 20, 2019 by 11:59 PM. After that, points will be deducted and posts will be scrutinized for any and all errors and whether all elements of the prompt are present. Have fun recording and we will watch all videos in class the following week.

The song that I chose is "I Love You" by Billie Eilish. I like how the two parts blend with each other. I also the melody of the song. The guitar and piano really compliment each other. My favorite thing about the song is the light airiness in Billie Eilish's voice because it adds emotion to the song. Overall, it is really a beautiful song to listen to.

  4. The song i chose is "Total Praise" by Richard Smalls. i really enjoyed making this video. It may not sound as good as the original, but i am proud of this. i love this song and how well the different sections are so well blended. The volume increases in the original song and i think that adds some "pizzazz" to it. i also enjoy the was it starts off slow and calm. The lyrics are a plus too.

Tamela mann voice sound so spiritual and powerful AND strong. You can feel her pain and suffering in her voice which makes it ten times better .Her pitches, the tone quality is beautiful.I love how the song has a song tone quality to the piece of music, but it gets louder throught the song.-JALIYAH SURLES

  6. For this week's blog post I chose "Flashlight" by Jessie J. The Bardon Bellas', from Pitch Perfect, cover of this is song is better to me personally. Anna Kendrick's lead vocals makes the song sweeter and more personal. The inclusion of a choir allows it to sound more powerful with its dynamics. The cover is also better to me because I like that movie and the story the song has in the movie. The song in general is great.

  7. I was surfing YouTube and I came across a cover by Youtuber Brian Vaulx of the song Chances, by Issac Carree. He sung a-capella and I was able to hear the clarity and pureness of his voice. When he first began, I was astonished because he almost sounded exactly like the original singer. His voice was beautiful, soft and clear. He enunciated his words very clearly, even when he would sing the lower notes. He had wonderful control with his voice in the way he could change his dynamics so quickly, and the way he did his runs so smoothly.

  8. For this post, I have decided to choose "Good To Me" by H.E.R. This song has a good R&B and soul music type of vibe and I felt as if the accompaniment of the guitar goes great with this song. The pitches and range changes as she sings which makes the song stand out. Her voice just runs so smoothly over the track and her tone was so good. She has to be one of my favorite artists as of this generation.

  9. For this week's blog post I chose the song "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. I chose this song beccause I felt that it was very good putch wise for my range but still gave me a little bit of a challenge. This song has been performed by many different people and in may different ways, but I feel as though it sounds better with piano as an accompaniment. This song is just so beautiful itself so it should be accompained by something soft and beautiful.

  10. The song I chose is called "Give Your Heart A Break" by Demi Lovato. The violin accompaniment goes really well with the song to me because I feel like it matches the meaning of the song. I also love her alibis they are very strong as well. The harmony of the song is really beautiful and the way she sung it made it seem as if she sung different emotions in the song. She sun as if she wanted to help the person. The different pitches she sung throughout the song was also good because she did not make them seem as if they were ran through they did not sound a hot mess. This is also my favorite Demi Lovato.

Its a nice song to cover, because the song isnt fast at the beginning and the words are quite simple to remember. She is one of my favorite artists to listen to. She is just an overall amazing singer and I tried my best to sing one of her many famous songs.

  15. For this weeks blog post, I chose “For the Good of Them” by Milton Brunson. I chose this song not only because it’s my favorite song, but because of the power and feeling that the soloist gives while singing the song. The soloist always finds a way to show the struggle that they’ve been though whole singing this song. The crescendos and decrescendos in this song along with the tone really sets the mood for this song. I like how the soloist doesn’t over power the song; she stays consistent with the choir and takes her time singing. This is a good song to do a cover to because you can take your time, feel connected with the song, and just let all your feelings out.

  16. The song I chose is “ Stay” by Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko. I chose this song because it has a nice beat and Rihanna sends a very peaceful message while singing. I love Rihanna songs but this one just stands out the most. Then when Mikky starts singing it’s like the same message Rihanna is singing but from a males perspective. They voice together is amazing. I really enjoy listening to this song.

  17. The song I chose was "Blackbird" by Boyce Avenue. This song was originally done by The Beatles, and I love this cover because he keeps the original mood set by the original song through soft vocals. He only uses an acoustic guitar, which makes the song feel more intimate in a way. His voice is just as soothing as Paul McCartney's was at that time. His dynamics make the song flow with a rhythm that reminds me of a body of smooth water: calming and aesthetically pleasing.

Also, I enjoy the accompaniment of the piano it really brings the meaning of the song. Even though this song has been out for awhile it stills resonants with me to this day. All in all this is hands down probably one of my favorite song by John Legend.

The song I chose for this song cover is "Motherless Child" by Elaine O'Neal. The reason I chose this song was because I just love the way she sings she puts all of her pain and pasion into this one song. I also love this song because this is from one of my favorite movies from Tyler Perry called "I Can Do Bad All By Myself". During this scene she is trying to do her homework and she asks her mother to help, she says yes, then her new fiance calls her and she goes running for him forgetting all about her child hints the name "Motherless Child".

    1. This also goes great with the beat especially during the middle where she gets louder and she sings with the beat. I just loved her performance during the play. In my opinion she is one of the most talented and soulful actor singing in a Tyler Perry play. Her overall tone was powerful and soulful. When I first watched the play and she started to sing it made me cry because it sounded like she went through it herself and that she connected with the character herself. That's what I want to do with my life I want to be able to express myself to people the way she did.

The beat blends very good with his voice. This is why NBA Youngboy is my favorite artist because his music is versatile and diverse.

  22. I chose a song called "Understanding" by an old school group Xscape. I wanted to do this song because it's one of my favorite music genres (old school and R&B). I feel like this song sends a strong message about how relationships need communication, it is key. I love how their voices are blended and balanced throughout the song as with the type of tempo they have. The high note was very energized and not strained. 25. My favorite music cover all time would be “Weak” by SWV covered by Yebba Smith. This is my favorite cover because I love this song but the way she changed it up amazed me. She doesn’t focus on “riffing” or “running” all the time but these are genuine vocals although she is definitely capable every time she did a “run” it was appropriate. The acoustics in the room are amazing and she’s taking her time with the song. She isn’t trying to copy SWV , her vocal range is clearly displayed here .

I think the trumpets and bass guitars and piano playing really complements his soulful voice. I would want to cover this song because the range of pitches aren’t to high. Although the song it short, it has a really catchy rhythm.

  27. The song I really enjoy is “Get You” by Daniel Caesar. I really enjoy this song because of the airiness in the melody and the freshness of the duet between Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis. When I listen to this song, I feel like I am floating on a cloud and surrounded by happiness. I also enjoyed how the accompaniment blended very well with Daniel’s voice. The music made it easier to determine his range while also assisting the dynamics throughout the song. The decrescendo towards the ending of the song also created a very big impact.I would most definitely recommend this song to anyone who has not listened to it before.

  28. The song I chose was "Congratulations" by Ebon Lurks, originally sung by Post Malone. I like this cover because of the change in melodies and beats that go well with the song. The singer's voice is very nice and hits all the notes. I like how in this song, the cover artist slows the whole song and it compliments his voice. This is why I like this song/cover, I like it better than the original song.

  29. In this this week's post I chose the beautiful cover of "Changes" by XXXTENTACION by a group named the Bomb Digz. One day while I was listening to different covers of songs I ran into a recent post by this group and immediately I fell in love with their powerful and almost angelic voices. This cover of Changes almost brought me to tears the first time I listened to it. The way their voices blended together and harmonized well with each other could make someone feel the meaning behind the song. I believe they always sing from deep in their souls to bring out the song more, to make the listener feel the emotions that was meant for the song. They impressed me with the different pitches that they could sing in and how smooth and genuine their voices were. These three will have a special place in my heart, and I hope to hear more amazing music from them.

The song that i chose to do a cover to is "Next To You" by Chris Brown featuring Justin Beiber. i like this song because it challenges my range as a bass and tenor. when i was younger i use to be able to hit the notes all the time, but as i got older it became harder and harder for me high notes.i also love the instruments and vocals in the song. My favorite elements are the drums and the violin. To top it off, the vocals by Chris Brown and Justin Beiber makes the son more meaningful with all the harmony.

  38. The song I have chosen to sing for my cover is "if I aint got you" by Alicia Keys. As a 9 year old, I did a cover of this song on my old laptop camera, so I decided to give this song again for a little bit of nostalgia. However, the nostalgic factor is not the only thing that draws me to this song. One of the other things is the piano accompaniment . It is the first thing that you hear in the song and it establishes the vibe first. Throughout the song, you can hear the piano supporting Alicia's singing. As she sings more intensly the piano sounds more intense. I also really like the way Alicia Keys sings the song. Aside from the lyrics, she uses dynamic changes to communicate more emphasis and passion to different parts of the song.

The song that I chose to cover is "Yesterday" by Mary Mary. I enjoy this song because the runs and riffs emphasize the soul within the song. This song also incudes dynamics by staying on the soft side at thw beginning, and the slowly progressing louder (crescendo) towards the chorus. I decided to sing this song a Capella because I can't breathe...unforunately. I also want to mention that in the original song the beginning accompaniment is rather long. Anyways, thanks for listing to my cover. I apologize for the "ashy-ness" of my tone.... I was unfortunately feeling ashy during the production of this cover .

  45. The song I have chosen is "For Your Glory" by Tasha Cobbs Leonard. She is one of my favorite gospel artist and this is truly a beautiful song. In the original a piano accompanies her voice, but the piano does not overpower her voice at all it only adds to her richness and tone in her voice which is something I really like. Since the song is repetitive she added some twist and flavor on certain notes which I tried to do ass well!

  47. Pt. 1: The first time I heard the song “She Used To Be Mine,” it was a cover. The broadway song was covered by annapantsu on YouTube, and it is my absolute favorite cover on the internet. The gentle, melancholy sound of the piano mixed with the artist’s deep, passionate voice makes for a beautiful contrast. The raw emotion as well as the tiny imperfections make this cover unique, and also very fun to listen to. The piano mostly remains constant, while the singer is given room to flutter around the instrumental notes—Anna is the only cover artist I religiously listen to because she takes the original music and really makes it her own.

You can tell that this piece was made in the 50s era and would be played aloud of the record player around Christmas time.

  50. The song I chose was “Yo(Excuse Me)” by Chris Brown. I like the song for its different ranges and simple style of sound that allows Chris Brown to really showcase his vocal abilities. I chose this song because it’s a classic piece and I’ve been singing it ever since it aired on the radio in 2005. The song also tells a story and the thoughts that go with every young guy’s first hand experience with seeing a new girl from “across the room” that catches his attention.

  51. The song I chose to do was "Fight on just a little while longer" from Detroit Become Human. I chose this song was because I like how it sounds. I like the blend of the piece and the tone of the song. The balance of the song is amazing also. I like the lyrics of the song and how the lyrics change only a little to make the song better and with every verse the song becomes more powerful. Cover: htttps://youtu.be/HI4Jie_jorY
