The Holidays Are Here!

This week we are looking at holiday music.  As we approach the holiday season, we should begin to look at music that would be appropriate for a holiday or Christmas performance.  In this blog post you will need to find one holiday or Christmas piece that will be appropriate for a choral performance.  Your selection can be for a choir or for a solo singer.  Include in your post why you chose the selection, what musical elements about it make it appropriate for holiday or Christmas, and whether or not you would perform in the selection yourself either as a solo or in a choir. All posts should be made by Friday November 16, 2018. No late posts accepted. Include a link to the video.

  1. The title of my song is This Christmas by Chris Brown. I chose this song because I like the arrangement and Chris brown's voice sounds good on it. The instrumental in the song is like up beat and uplifting, it gets you in that happy, Christmas spirit. I think this song is better if sung as a solo because of the runs and different styles one person can use. It is appropriate for holiday because it is literally about Christmas, giving gifts, Mistletoes, and all of the other things that come with the Christmas holidays.

  2. The title of my song is " Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" , by Destiny's Child. I chose this song because it is very holiday related and it is a joyful song. The Destiny's Child harmonize well together but this song can be performed as a solo piece. The Rhythm to the song is very upbeat and catchy. This is a traditional song that many people know. I think that this song should be sung by three people. This song is about a Reindeer that is unique and helps Santa guides his sleigh on Christmas eve and he has a very shiny nose.

  3. I chose the song "Who Would Imagine" by Whitney Houston. The reason why I chose this song is because my grandmother #RIP used to sing this song all the time when I was a child. I think this should be dung with a solo anf choir. Whitney Houston's song talks all about celebrating Jesus's birth and reign. When I hear this song all I do is cry because this was my grandmother's favorite song. I could just hear her sing it in my head.

This song is basically telling you to enjoy Christmas this year with your family no matter what. This song is all about Christmas and mistletoe's and gifts. Spending time with you family and just being happy.I will put a link of Donny Hathaway and Chris Brown version i still like the original better.

  6. The song I have chosen is "Another Year has Gone by" by Celine Dion. I chose this because its a really beautiful song and has wonderful lyrics. It isn't a fast pace song like many other holiday songs but its really catchy, especially the chorus. I also like this song because it isn't a song many people think of when they think of Christmas time. It's basically a love song to her partner saying another year has gone by and they are still together on that Christmas and it feels like they have just met.

  7. The title of my song is “Mary Did You Know”. The version I chose is the arrangement from The Braxton’s. This has always been my favorite Christmas song because I grew up in church with this. The meaning behind this song and the message about Jesus has always spoke to me. The Braxton sisters also just have a way of capturing you with their many runs and harmonies. This song is appropriate for Christmas because it is pretty much telling the story of Jesus which is what Christmas is all really about.

  9. My chosen song is "Silent Night" by the Temptations. I chose this song because the melody within is so angelic and mystical to me along with the harmony. The feeling this song gives can lift up people all around for the holidays and make them come together with their families. This song has a warm and loving feel to it which it makes it appropriate for the holidays and people's loved ones. I feel like this song could be performed by a solo artist. The tempo and beat of the song could make anyone slow dance and just be really happy.

  11. I chose “Give Love on Christmas Day” by Yolanda Adams. I believe the title itself gives the reason why it’s a Christmas song. I made this selection because I’ve loved listening to Yolanda Adams from a young age. She has an incredible soprano, alto, and tenor voice. The hard part was deciding which one of her many Christmas songs I was going to choose, since I like almost all of them. I finally settled on this one because I really enjoy the song itself performed by The Jackson 5. Yolanda Adams just has a nice style of singing it. I don’t believe that I would sing this rendition of the song by myself. Perhaps I would perform it as an ensemble though.

  12. The song I chose is This Christmas. I chose the one arranged by Chris Brown instead of the original one. I chose this one because of the emotion he brings while singing it. His twist on the song makes it very soothing and "Christmasy." He added soul and R&B to the piece which I really enjoyed. This piece is more of a solo piece, than ensemble piece.

  13. The song I chose is Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms. I chose this song because it's a well known classic. I can be sung by ensembles or soloist. I like this song because for one, I have been listening to this since I was a kid, and also I like it because of it gives you the Christmas feel. It has a very jolly, upbeat tempo that makes you snap and sway to it. Bobby Helms embodies this song with his singing techniques and really brings this song to life.

  14. The song I chose was Santa Clause is coming to town by the Jackson 5. I chose this song because it is very iconic. This song is very fun. Michael and his brother's did this song when they were young and Michael was a kid and his voice was so mature for his age. I like this song because it brings back many warm memories from previous Christmas's. This song could be done by a soloist or a group, but I don't think it has enough parts for an entire choir ensemble.

  15. The song I chose is "Give Love on Christmas Day" by The Jackson 5. I chose this song, because I love songs by the Jackson 5. I also love this hearing this song around Christmas time. The beat makes it feel like a Christmas song. It makes you do good and also makes you love your family even more. This song would be good performed with a choir and a solo.

  16. The name of my song is "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole. This song is also known as Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. I chose this song because it is a classic recognized by everyone. It specifically was written for Christmas time. I personally think this song should be performed as a solo but it could be sung with a choir.

I love the lyrics of the song, and it is an appropriate Christmas song because it tells about the birth of Jesus Christ. I think this song is best performed as a solo, at least that is the way I prefer to perform it.

  19. The song I chose for this week’s Blog Post is “Jesus Is The Reason” by Kirk Franklin. This is a very upbeat song with great parts and even better lyrics. Although the song originated in 1995 , it is one of the best gospel songs even today !!! I feel as if this song would be great for our MPS Holiday Concert

  22. For this week's blog post I am doing the song "We Are Christmas" which was famously performed by Spelman College Glee Club. I love the melodies of the song. The bells which are included in the song add that extra Christmas magic. The soloist's voice is so full and smooth creating a calming environment. Every Christmas I listen to this song on the loud speaker throughout the house.

  24. The song that is great for the Holidays is the Penatonix version of “White Winter Hymnal”. It can be performed as an full choir piece of just a simple ensemble. It is a beautiful mix of SATB recalling an event of following a pack of friends in the winter snow and having a great time in the name of Christmas/ holiday spirit. This song is a fun rendition of the original Fleet Foxes song and it is done acapella which makes the song easy to perform. It is personally a piece I believe the choir should do for Christmas or the holidays because it is easy, sweet sounding melody that puts us in the spirit.

  25. The song I chose is "O Come, All Ye Faithful" arranged by Pentatonix. It is a beautiful arrangement and it always gets stuck in your head. The song is upbeat and uses various harmonies to keep the listener engaged. This song would be amazing if done by the right choir, and I would love to do it because it is a song that has an energy all on its own. This is always one of the first Christmas songs I listen to because I can always get lost in the complexity of the piece.

  26. The song I have chosen is “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra. I chose this song because it embodies everything that I think Christmas should be. It mentions friends gathering near, troubles going miles away and letting you heart be light. Aside from the lyrics, the instrumentals also put you in the Christmas spirit. The way the strings and ensemble combine in the background makes the song sound joyful and light. So to keep this effect I think this song is best sung as a solo and choir in the back. I also like how Sinatra takes his time while singing, which allows you to invision the perfect Christmas. And in any situation where you have an audience you want them to feel something and I think this song would be perfect for that.

  27. The song I chose is " All I Want For Christmas" by Amber Riley. She is from the show "Glee" and this was a cover from Mariah Carey version. The song has a exciting little music and you can learn very fast. This song would be nice for a solo because you can make it your own. Also it can be great for a choir to be the background just have to make the right arrangements. In my opinion it is appropriate for holidays because it saying its more than just gifts and stocking. Just want to spend time with someone you care about.

  28. “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobbly Helms is the song I chose. I absolutely love this song and whenever I hear it I automatically get in the Christmas Holiday spirit. I grew up listening to this song each Christmas so hearing it also brings a sense of nostalgia. “Jingle Bell Rock” would be both an amazing choir piece or solo performance piece. The elements that are present in it make it very versatile. It’s a song that literally details what occurs during the Christmas season. There are chimes from bells in the air, dancing, and family. It brings an upbeat and rock-n-roll feel to an otherwise traditional holiday.

"There's no Christmas Without You" by Kirk Franklin is a song that is very appropriate for a choral performance. The song is a choir selection, however it can be sung as a solo piece. "There's no Christmas Without You" is a song about the holiday season and how truly there is no Christmas without Jesus. The choir also converses with one another in certain parts of the song as they tell each other "Merry Christmas". Personally, I would perform with song with a choir.

A Christmas piece that would fit an choral performance is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” I picked this selection because I enjoyed the energy that is in the song. This song just makes you want to get up and break out a couple of dance moves as you are decorating your huge tree with your family. The drum and guitar makes this song appropriate for Christmas because of the level of enthusiasm given off. I would totally perform this song in a choir. It is one of those songs that lifts your mood, and also because it is a easy song to learn.

  33. The song I have chosen is "Mary, Did You Know?", specifically the variation by Pentatonix. I think they approached the original piece in a very unique way, and I love how the song is done a capella. There is so much emotion in this version, and I love how they add lots of dynamics to the song. This song can be considered festive because the lyrics relate to Jesus and Mary. I have already performed this song with the BTW choir a few years ago, but I feel like it is good enough to be sung again. I would perform it in a choir or a solo; however, to sing it in a choir is much more appropriate since there are so many different parts, but I would like to perform it because personally, I love the emotion that I get from singing the song, along with the fact that I love when a lot of people can get together and sing; I think it connects people.

  35. The song I chose is Hallelujah, by the Pentatonix. This woud be a fun new style and way to preform a song. It fits the Christmas theme also since it means praise God. Since Christams is about the birth of Christ and praising him, it fits well. This would be a choir selection.
