  1. I chose the song "Word To The Mutha" by Bell Biv DeVoe. I chose this song because I love the way the beat goes. The beat just have a funky attitude with it. This song has the New Edition group singing on a Bell Biv DeVoe song. It made my heart jump out because they have a reunion. Most people don't know this song because they don't really play it on radios like they used to.

  2. I’ll take you there by the Staple Singers is my favorite old school R&B Soul song. I love this song mainly because the words are so true and down to earth. “Ain’t nobody cryin’ Ain’t nobody worried.” In my opinion , old school music is the best music , not only does old school music talk about the struggle but it’s so much better than some of the bad things that contemporary music talks about.

  4. One of my favorite songs from the 90s is "If I Ever Fall In Love" (A Capella Version) by Shai. I like this song because it showcases their voices very nicely and there is no where to hide so everyone had to hold their own, which they did really well. Their voices blended together well and their use of dynamics, such as crescendo, forte, and piano, was executed really well. I liked how during the verses they would come together and sing certain phrases together to really enforce the lyrics. This is one of the only a capella songs that has really stuck with me and I think it has no flaws, but "There is always room for improvement" so there could be something that I'm missing.

  5. The song I chose this week is No Scrubs by TLC. I like this song because the beat is so smooth. This R&B song is a hit from the time and came out until now, and it is continuing to grow. The lyrics are so relatable to my teenage mind. I really like music from this time because I feel like I was supposed to be born in this time period.

  6. One of my favorite songs from the 80s is "Dont Stop Believing" by the band Journey. The song just has such a catchy tune and is easy to learn. The guitar solos throughout the song are so cool and just make you want to dance. I started watching acapella covers and this led me to the love of acapella and the old tv show Glee. I also love the message of the song to keep believing and never give up.

  7. I chose My My My by Johnny Gil this week. I love this song. I would call myself an old head because the only thing my family plays around me is blues, and this song just reminds me of that whole time period. The time period that Johnny did this song in was not even from a 'blues time period', so I feel like he is an old head too. I feel connected to him on that level. The beat and words connect well together, and it is not an out right disgusting song. So I think he did a balance to make it appropriate for everyone.

  8. One of my favorite songs from the 90s is "Doo Wop( That Thing)" by Lauryn Hill. I like this song because of how Lauryn Hill can sing and also raps. She present in her songs. The beat of the song is also catchy. You can easily start to nod your head and sing along with her. There aren't many good female artist that can sing and rap with any genre of music. Thats why i like to go back to the old school music. I would say i listen to more old school r&b than my generation of music. Anyone can listen to this song and sing along to it because she is that good of an artist. Her lyrics and the beat of the song flow together well. This was a great time period for music.

I enjoy the tune as well as the instruments used in the song. The trumpet and violin are played all throughout the song and I enjoy it.The whole song just makes me want to get up and do the "Swing" dance.

  10. The song that I chose this week is "cause I love you" by Lenny Williams. One reason I chose this classic love song is because I really love the instrumentals. I especially like how well you can here the strings in this song because stringed instruments have a special place in my heart since I used to play violin. Another reason I chose this song is because I love the passion in Lenny's voice while he is singing. He is really singing like he is so in love with this girl. He sounds like he wants to cry almost. I appreciate this not only just because its just emotional and sweet but a big part of singing is entertaining and he entertains well. So I can definitely understand why this song is a classic throwback song.

  11. The song I chose is “Black Bird” by the legendary music group known as The Beatles. I have a deep enjoyment for this song because the musical elements and lyrics are both simple and complex. There are very few instruments used in the song, but the way that they are used is what adds substance to “Black Bird”. Also the lyrics are unordinary but tell a story. They inspire the listener to be proud of who they are and take the parts of them that aren’t what many would consider “perfect” and use them to their advantage creating something beautiful.

  12. My favorite song before the 2000s is “When Doves Cry” by Prince. This song was made in 1984. Prince was an great artist and it was very tragic when he died that is why i'm chosing this song, for the rememberence of Prince. This song was a popular hit because Prince was already an popular artist because of his other hits. I love how the song starts out with the powerful electric guitar. I also like the “electric keyboard"? The lyrics of the song shows the emotion of he felt when he was writing the song. I like how he perfectly executed hitting high notes that another guy would fuss about saying it was to high. The verses are okay and tells his story but I really like the chorus.

  15. My favorite old school song is from the 80s and it’s “Oh Sheila” by Ready For the World. The song has such a fun funky beat that when you hear it, it automatically makes you want to dance. It puts a type of nostalgia on you that makes you want to have a party and dance with jerri curled hair. The song is a sweet almost serenade to a girl named Sheila on how much he loves her and wants to with her alone. “Oh Sheila” is a simple song, but it tells a story you can relate to and the harmony in the chorus is something I have always been attracted to.

  16. My favorite old school 80s song is “Before I let you go” by the Maze. This is my favorite because I like the groove of it. At first I hated it because my mom would always have it on repeat in the car and she would sing her heart out and after jus listening to it I fell in love with it. I think the message behind it is that he didn’t want to lose his girl.

  18. One of my favorite songs made before the 2000 is "Home" by Diana Ross. This song was first release in the movie "The Wiz" in 1978. When you listen to this song you automatically go into a calm happy place. In the song the character Dorothy is home sick. She states that she is lost and how she wishes to be in the comfort of her home. There are not many instruments being used in the song, the only distinct instruments heard was the harp and piano, which gave the song the relaxing peaceful sound.

An old school song that I’m particularly fond of is “Can We Talk” by Tevin Campbell. It was released in 1993. I like the song because it is simple and I feel as if everyone can easily relate to the words. One of the most important musical elements he incorporates into the song is passion! Campbell’s song is a favorite of mine because his voice is just so soft spoken in the song.

  20. My chosen is "Is This The End" by New Edition,a very iconic group. It is a 80s song that I adore and love as it was my first time knowing about New Edition. The beat is just way above my explanation it takes me to paradise along with the harmony in the background. Just the way that their voices and the beat blends together makes me fan girl. This song has a certain vibe that makes me relax and happy.

  22. The song I chose was "What About Your Friends" by TLC. The first time I heard the song was with my mom in the car. At that time I didn't know too much about them. She also told me this was one of her favorite songs by them. I like the song personally because it has a nice groove. The song has a good meaning as well because saying how you can't put trust in some people. When you do trust them as a friend they let you down instead. Then want to say you acting funny. Which a lot of people can relate in daily life.

  23. For this week's blog post I am doing the song "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing". His vocals are so smooth and calming. I love this song because of its lyrics and upbeat tempo. The song reminds you t never stress over anything and to trust in yourself. It is one of Stevie Wonders most popular songs and has been recorded by many other artist, such as Tori Kelly. I had so much fun performing this song last year
at POPs. I just genuinely enjoy listening to this song because it always lifts my spirits.

  26. The song I chose for this week's assignment is "Computer Love", by Zapp and Roger. The R&B hit was released in 1986. This song was a hit then and it helped to open doors for artist today. I like this song because it was one of the first to use a talk box, what is now known as Auto-Tune. I really like music from this time period. I like today's artist sample work from artist in that time period.

  27. The song I have chosen is Shoop by Salt n Pepa. Growing up I never understood what exactly fhey were talking about in the song but it was still super entertaining. My mother was a huge Salt n Pepa fan, as a teen she even cut her hair like theirs.Since she was a fan I became a fan. What first grabs your attention with “Shoop” is when it comes on with “Hey Yeah I wanna Shoop baby” then Pepa begins to raps as flawless and smooth as possible, the only way she knows how. The entire track was just a fun and playful song. Even the video was entertaining to watch.

  28. The song I have chosen is "Somewhere" from the 1957 Broadway musical, West Side Story, which was later made into a film in 1961. For this piece, Leonard Bernstein composed the music, while Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics. I remember seeing the film for the first time in 8th grade, and once this song was sung, I suddenly felt a deeper connection to the entire story. I love this song because of how much emotion is put into it. I love the way the two singers, Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood, merge their voices together at the end. I like that they do this after they BOTH have already sung separately; it sort of symbolizes that they are content with being together, despite what the others think. I think the instruments definitely compliment the two singers during this song, and everyone works together to make it really expressive and emotional. I love the message this song portrays.

My favorite old school song is “That Thing” by Lauryn Hill. I absolutely love “That Thing”. Hill’s lovely voice and truth filled message makes the song fully enjoyable. My favorite line in “That Thing” is “How you gonna win, when you ain't right within?”. I really love how Lauryn Hill’s music always discusses truth, real life scenarios, and things that are relatable. Her music speaks so much life and volume. There aren’t many artists like Lauryn Hill in today’s musical culture. In conclusion, “That Thing” by my Lauryn Hill is my favorite old school song.

  30. The selection I chose for this assignment is "La La means I love you" by The Delfonics. This song is old old school but its real music. The song itself immediately catches my attention as soon as it comes on. I mostly like the instrumental part in the beginning and through out the song. I like how all three of the members blend their voices in different pitches, round their oohs well and how each person has a different way of expressing them self. The violin and guitar were the perfect instruments to choose for a song such as this one. I like how the violin flows with their voices' pitch movement. I also like this song a lot because it sounds very similar to "Sitting in the park" by Billy Stewart, which is another good song I gravitate towards.

  31. The song I chose was "Africa" by Toto. This song was recorded on October 18th, 1981 and released on October 30th, 1982. The song's instrumental element is easily recognizable because of the intro with the keyboard and the symbols. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, as well.
