Choral Music

For this second blog post, you will need to choose one choral piece that you like or enjoy hearing or performing. Tell the name of the piece, who it is by, what voicing it is for (mixed voices= SATB, women's ensemble, men's ensemble, children's choir, etc), if it uses any accompaniment (piano, drums, other instruments) and what you like about the piece. Be as specific as possible and use as many musical terms as possible.

In your second paragraph, discuss what critiques you have about the performance. Think like a musician and make informed comments. Do not be too broad--comments like "they sounded good" or "the tone could have been better" are not specific. Instead, write something like "the sopranos blended well when singing the higher notes and they all used the same vowel space" or "the piano was not too loud compared to the singers, providing a good balance". These are much better comments. Please check all spelling, grammar, and punctuation. All posts are due by Friday, August 17, 2018 at 11:59 pm. No late posts are accepted.

  1. The song that I like is "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" by Roy Ringwald ( SATB.) This is a song that we performed a lot in class last year . In this song I really feel the spirit and it gives me joy . It gives you hope as well , and it is encouraging during hard times.
Although this video only showed the director , the choir in the video I chose sung this so well. Their dynamics and cut offs are clean and concise. The balance of the choir is great. This choir gave a great sound during the whole song. The dynamics utilized throughout this piece are astounding.

  2. The song I chose is "Music, When Soft Voices Die" by Victor C. Johnson. It is an SSA piece that pairs with a piano. I enjoy how the melody blends well with the different harmonies, and the dynamics match the lyrics and add more depth to the song.

I am not sure how many singers were performing the version I listened to, but I heard each part clearly. The piano was at the right volume to where it balanced out the voices well. They carried over their phrases and that connected everything together and made it seem more complete.

  3. The song that I chose is called " The Best is Yet to Come" by Donald Lawrence. This song is a SATB piece that be accompanied by a wide range of instruments varying from drums to piano. This song really fills me up with the spirit and just gets me hyped up.
The choir in the specific video I chose was the United Voices Choir. This choir was led by Anthony Brown. I think that the altos and sopranos blended very well together, giving the song a very balanced sound. However, I do think that the men could've had more energy and had more sound.

  4. The song I chose is "Can I Ride" by Sheldon Curry. The selection is the one we did. I am assuming that we did it in SATB with a piano accompanying. I chose this song because it is personally my favorite from my 9th Grade year. We worked so hard on this piece, and it turned out so good. We sound amazing on the recording.

When we came in, it was as if we didn't have enough energy. But there were great articulations and dynamics, especially with the boys. There was one part, though, when the boys came back in with the girls, they were shaky. Also, when it was just girls, it was some unbalance. I couldn't pin point which group it was from though. All around it was a good put together piece.

  5. The song I chose is "Open the Eyes of My Heart" by Trey McLaughlin. The different parts in the songs are SAT with a piano, guitar, and bass. I chose this song because it is one of my favorite covers by him and also I believe it has a true meaning behind the whole song if your really think deep enough and really listen to the song. I liked how they began the song with the different parts starting at different times and having it blend together.

Something I thought that they should've worked on is the parts because you really couldn't really hear the guys singing. When singing unison, it was really good they sounded like one person as you should. As they broke off into parts it sounded as if all the girls were singing soprano and that there were few altos.

  6. The song I like to perform is "Lunar Lullaby" by Jacob Narverud. I love this song for one because I sung it at all state. I love the sweet and soft melody of the song. It’s really beautiful because it is accompanied by a piano. The song was talking about a sweet dream. It really is a relaxing and calm piece.

Something we could have worked on was better energy. We could have used way more air on some parts. Some good things were everybody was clean and clear with their vowels and consonants. They kept the tone, pitches and melody right. They made it really beautiful to listen to. This video isn’t all state choir but it is a choir that sung it.

  7. The song that I chose is " Jesus Promised". The selection is by the Chicago Mass Choir. This songs are for the sections SATB. It is accompanied with drums, piano, and bass. Every time I hear this song it always gets me hyped and in a good mood.

The choir that sung this song I do not have any critiques about. They have a very great balance between all parts. They also showed great facial expressions throughout the entire song, and even had dance moves to go with it. The tone was very strong and clear, and they had clean cut offs as well.

  8. The song I have been enjoying is “Stand By Me”. It is a musical masterpiece that I adore and it was song beautifully. The Alto to Soprano ratio was exquisite, no one overpowered each other and there sound was neat and crisp. The tenors are super strong and there dynamics were pleasing. I felt moved by the lyrics and the piano that accompanied.
Although it was a delightful piece there are elements that could’ve been better. The solo could’ve been better, it was certain words that sounded strained. There are also certain areas where notes are held out that sounds bland. If would found a way to add effect to there words it would have been even better. Other than that this song is one of my all time favorites.

  9. My chosen song is "You Will Win" by Jekalyn Carr. It is obviously a gospel that I really love and adore. This song is so uplifting and encouraging to those who are down. The song is accompanied by drums, guitars, and a piano. The altos And sopranos acapella was excellent, their voices blended very well with the occasional singing from the tenors and baritones who also harmonized greatly.
Though it was a delicate and beautiful song there were a few flaws. The are some parts of the song that could have been accented. Also the range could have been longer to make the flow of the song stronger and melodic. There were some parts that could have been stronger to support the soloist on certain notes that she held. Other than that this song was very flawless and could put me in a holy mood anytime.

  10. The song that i have chosen is "Elijah Rock" by Moses Hogan. It was performed by The University of Utah Singers. They are a mixed choir. We sang this song last year, but arranged differently. This choir was not accompanied by any instruments. I like this song because it is powerful and pleasing to the ear. I like how even though the song has several different ways it can be sung, it always sounds good.
What i liked about this performance was that they articulated very well. i could hear all of the parts clearly. One thing i feel they should improve on is their dynamics , i felt as if they yelled most of the song. But overall they blended well and had good projection. This is probably one of the best choir performances i have seen.

  11. The song I like I stand by me By Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, and Ben E. King. This piece is a SATB (Soprano Alto Tenor Bass). This piece uses a piano for the background music. Something I like about this piece is how all the voices blend together and also how you have crescendo and de crescendo parts. This piece is very nice and pianissimo.

Something I don't like about one choir singing stand by me was there wasn't as many runs and a lot of harmony. Other than those things the choir was well put and blended together really well. Also another thing was they didn't have very many facial expressions. There were some parts when it sounded like they were out of breath or screaming. In conclusion I do I like this song a lot and I think it is a great piece for us to do.

  12. One particular song I enjoy is "Always Remember" sung by the Aeolians of Oak-wood University. It is sung in SATB and is acapella. I enjoy this song because it is so cleanly executed and precise. They enunciated their consonants and had excellent breathing control. They had excellent dynamics and their crescendos were so fine and clean. Each pitch was executed to perfection by all of the sections.

I found it very difficult to find something about this piece that i didn't like but I did find a few things. The altos could've been a little bit louder. Since the sopranos have the melody they carry the song but you should still have a nice balance. Also at certain points in the song the words seemed a little blurred and I had to really listen to understand. Overall it is a wonderful piece of music performed brilliantly by the Aeolians.

  13. One song that I enjoy listening to would have to be "I Pray We All Be Ready" by the Chicago Mass Choir. This song is sung in SAT. I enjoy listening to this song because it is a very moving gospel song. It also has a message behind. In the first and second verse, its talking about how you should give yourself back to God before he comes back. In the third verse, its talking about how you can't always depend on your mom to pray for you, so you should learn how to pray while you still have time. This song uses an piano and drum.

In this performance, the sopranos had a very nice balance; so as the altos. The tenors in this song could have projected a little more so the listeners could hear them. The musicians could have played a little softer so that the choir could be more heard. Overall, this is a great selection and a powerful song that shows emotion and means something. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=i+pray+we+all+be+ready

  14. The song I chose was “Fire” perform by the Angel City Chorale. They perform the song on America’s got talent and it is truly amazing. I love their tone and diction that is so clear and loud. There notes were amazing the soloist did a beautiful job of hitting the high notes. The realistic sound of rain and thunder was also a beautiful component to add into the beginning.
I really did enjoy this choir but there are few improvements that can be made. For example there were certain times in the song that were very low and it was hard for me to understand the beautiful notes. There is also a part where I feel like they are just yelling the lyrics and not singing . The notes of the tenor/base section where are so very lackluster. These are minor adjustments that can be made to help them sound even more fantastic. I can’t wait to hear more of them

  17. I, Timothy Brannon, chose the song ‘Need Freedom’ by Sierra McClain and Empire Cast. It was sung in SAB voicing with a lead soloist. The song uses a piano, keyboard, bass guitar, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, and the drums. I like that the song is upbeat and it sends an incredible message.

The lead singer used precise falsettos, and the background singers were right on top of every pitch. The only error that I might have found about the song is that the lead singer kept doing the same run at least twice. Other than that, the blend of all the instruments and vocals was just about perfect.

  18. I chose the song "How Far I'll Go." It was performed by the Voices of Hope Children's Choir on America's Got Talent. The voice parts has sopranos, altos, tenors, and their were no accompaniments provided or present. The altos had very good pitches and a few staggers in and out. The sopranos used their head voices very well, but overall they did an amazing job and are very talented.
To critique, all of the members didnt have any expressions on thier face until the end. Your face tells how you feel about the song and whether your really into it or not. Overall they sounded really good and did a great job.

  20. One of my favorite choral songs to hear is “Cantate Hodie” composed by Mary Lynn Lightfoot. The song means sing today, which is what the Latin words “cantate hodie” mean. I performed this song (SATB arrangement) in the 8th grade accompanied by the piano and I really enjoyed it. I like that it has both Latin and English because they flow very well together. The song is somewhat simple, but does a good job at displaying the different sections. I like this piece because it is very bright and uplifting.

The choir that I chose to analyze (Stony Brook School Concert Choir) did an amazing job executing the dynamics in the song as they are written. The sections were blended well, meaning that no section was louder than the other was. They also had good tone color, which made the performance nice to listen to. Their diction was really precise and crisp and expressed the meaning of the song in a great way. They could improve on breath support to perfect some of the pitches so they will not seem like they are straining. Despite that issue, this was a very nice performance.

  21. The song I enjoy singing is, Deo Dicamus Gratias. This was written by Victor C. Johnson. The arrangement is for SSA as well as SATB. It is accompanied by the piano. I enjoy the blending of voices ranging from soprano to bass, when sung with SATB. I enjoy the slow, by elegant tempo .

The choir I Analyzed was McKinney Boyd High School Varsity Women's Cantorei choir. This was sung in SSA. They did an excellent job with dynamics. Their decrescendos and crescendos were suburb. The piano didn't overpower the women. When pronouncing "DEO", their "O" was very round which was nice.

  22. The choral piece I chose is the version of “Oh Happy Day” that was performed in Sister Act 2. In the movie it was orchestrated and directed by Whoopi Goldberg’s character, Deloris Van Cartier, who was a nun. The true composer of the song however is Edwin Hawkin Singers and the voicing can be classified as SATB. The piano was used in this particular performance of “Oh Happy Day” giving it a nice, intimate churchy feel. I really enjoy listening to this version of the song because it makes me feel good and causes me to remember the first time I watched the movie creating a warm feeling of nostalgia within me.

This version of “Oh Happy Day” was performed in a way that executed the vision directors and writers must have had for it when they wrote it in the script. When it first began, the soloist was not truly confident or comfortable with his talent and didn’t put his all into the song. But, as it progressed he began to find his confidence and put his best foot forward shocking the listeners. The choir had perfect pitch and they blended very well with one another. They took note of the crescendos and decrescendos, and did a great job executing them. The soloist was amazing and had a very unique tone.

  23. The song I have selected for my blog post is "Clap Your Hands and Sing". The composer is Mary Lynn Lightfoot. It is accompanied by a piano and you should also clap. This song could but song in 2-part or 3-part mixed. The song meaning is to raise a joyful noise and give praises. This song reminds me of a song that we sung two years ago called "A Choral Flourish". I really like this song and hope that we could try this song this school year. I think if we were to sing this song it would sound very good.

I like how the song was not so fast but still had rhythm. The song was really balanced and I was able to hear all parts. The dynamics sounded like perfection. I like how when each time there was a clap, the words around it correlated. The song overall was well executed.

  24. For this week's blog post I am doing the all time favorite, "This Little Light of Mine". It was performed by DaNell Daymon and Greater Works. It was originally written in the 1920s by Harry Dixon Loes. This song as specifically performed as SATB and was accompanied by a track of pr-recorded music. I like this song because despite the simplicity of the lyrics, the message behind them is so beautiful.

The performance is very difficult to critique due to ho well it was. The only problem that I found was the issue of their diction. At times, due to them moving around, it was hard to hear and understand them. Other than that they were well balanced, energetic and overall entertaining.

  25. The choral piece I chose was Agnus Dei. This song is in a three part mix.The composer of this piece is Sammuel Barber. The choir I watched execute this song was The Rotterdam Symphony Chorus. I really like how the tenors blended with the Soprano's and Alto's tone and did not out sing them. When you look close4ly you see how the women in Soprano and Alto section shape and round their mouth to fit the sound of the note and how they wanted to come out.

  26. A song I love listening to and also performing is "I've Been In The Storm So Long," by Jeffrey L. Ames. This piece is a capella, and has SATB parts. I love listening to this song due to the immense emotion it gives off. It is powerful, and I love how the notes just blend together to create that perfect harmony. It really sounds like there is a storm happening! I also love how the lyrics can be interpreted differently by different people. Someone might sense a melancholy vibe, while another person might sense a desperation/longing for help.

This version of the song has to be my favorite, despite certain flaws. I absolutely loved how the parts really melted together, and I loved how the choir made use of their dynamics. I also think the choir, along with the soloist, was great at projecting to a large audience. Despite this, I feel as though the soloist could have had a more clear diction. I felt like certain words were pronounced a bit too southern-like for this type of piece. I also feel like the choir rushed with the "ohhhh"s right before the "when I get to Heaven" part. Overall though, I loved this choir's performance!

  27. The choral piece that I like hearing and enjoy performing is Deitrick Haddon's LXW, "Great God". This song is performed with mixed voices, SATB. I love the mix of instruments that help to develop the sound. The upbeat tempo of the piano and drums really bring the song together. "Great God" is performed with guitars, a piano, drums, horns, a drum pad/beat machine, and a hard lead with vocal cues. That mixture leads to a great song.

Even though I feel the "Great God" is a great song, I must say that I cannot distinguish between the altos and sopranos at the break. When I perform this song at church, there is a smooth transition between sopranos, altos, and tenors. The music was upbeat, on pace, and at a good volume. Overall, this is a great choral piece. This piece was created for youth choirs!

  28. The song that I chose for this blogpost is “This is Me”. This song is from the movie The Greates Showman. The song was performed by The Voices of Hope Children’s Choir on America’s Got Talent. I like that this song can be changed to different mixes like SATB but will still have that emotional undertone. I also love the message behind it as it’s a very powerful song.

The only criticism I could give is that the pitch sounds a little young but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The soloists did a very good job at executing their different parts. They added nice runs that complimented each other but at the same time don’t overpower the choir. The choir had great facial expressions and energy throughout the performance. Overall it was great and I hope they win.

  29. The song I've chosen for this assignment is "I want you back" by the Jackson 5. The choir singing the song did an excellent job with blending their selves as the instruments along with harmonic voices. they used finger snaps as the beat and the rest was acapella which was used verbally. This song is one of the songs we're working on for this year. It is a very catchy and up beat song.

The way the choir included a little choreography really helped listeners catch on to the beat and the way of the song quicker. Their choreography really matched the theme of the song they were singing. The soloist had a beautiful outstanding voice that was able to be heard over the background acapella singers' voices. The background acapella singers did an awesome job singing in unison all together without many mess ups. the choir could work on their sound as far as projection and enthusiasm but overall the performance was magnificent.

A choral piece that I like singing is the hallelujah chorus. I like this song because it is a two day stay there every high school does every year at the Christmas performance. It is a SATB song which makes it even better because there’s a part for everybody. This song uses all types of instruments for example a piano, trumpet, and even a organ. The depiction that I draw this song is like a majesty or royal type of them and that is what I like about this song more than others per say.

As far as an overall performance every single type of everyone was balance with one another. The men in a way had a ear for each other and listened to one another therefore they were able to sound like one person. The sopranos had a very relaxed tone making them not sound like they are straining. A lot of dynamics we implemented cause the music to keep its interest.

What i like about the piece is that it has great parts though the song that shows diversity and the harmony. It also challenges the choir with the high parts in the song. The song had great dynamics that made it good.

With this piece it showed how the choir can conquer a challenge. We had times where we were unsure what tne note was. The boys were not with each other at all but pulled through. We had gold dynamics with the repeating sayings. In all i believe we did a good job with this piece.

The song is very well developed. I think that it was made overtime. I don't know if it came from a movie or not but I saw it in a movie and I never knew about it. I just love how the song goes. Beautiful!

I’ve been buked tells a story through each note. While singing this song you have to show face expression that you are actually feeling what you are singing. Overall this song is beautiful and makes you feel every pain that the artist felt while writing it.

  35. One of the choral piece I really enjoy listening to is "The word was god". It is by Rosephanye Powell and the voicing for it is SATB. It is an acapella song which I like because it gives me the chance to hear the all the rhythms in the sections. I also like the use of dynamics in her music. They are used in very effective places. I also like the lyrics of the song, I feel like they match well with the style of the song.

Overall the performance was very well done. They're diction was very clear. they also had very clear and significant dynamics and I felt like their movements as a choir matched the piece very well. I can also tell they are using great vocal technique. It is a great song and a great performance.

  36. “The Word was God” by Rosephanye Powell is my favorite choir piece. This choir had good tone and had a pretty good blend. This piece is for SATB also known as mixed voices. It is accompanied by the piano.

I feel as if they were really consistent , respectful and accurate with the dynamics in the beginning . The Tenors has a very nice, strong and healthy sound on “In the beginning was the word”. I wish they would stand still while singing because it looks like unintentional movement because everybody isn’t moving the same way and everybody isn’t moving. They could be a little more enthusiastic about it , as Mr.Williams always tells us “smile” , if you’re not feeling what you’re singing it shows on your face so nobody else is going to feel it and that will result in a boring performance.

  37. The piece I chose was "Inside Out" sung by the Mississippi Children's Choir. It is an SATB pice. I chose this one because I really like this song. I also loved the way they sung it and how everything was put together. Some instruments found in this song was the keyboard, the bass guitar, and drums.

Overall, their performance would get a 9 from me. The sections did a really good job not overpowering eachother because this is a loud song and it was a lot of them in each section. They kept their energy up throughtout the whole piece. The first and second soloist could have did a better job enunciating their words during their solo. They were very well uniformed also.

This particular performance is intriguing to me because they stayed in tuned considering its a large amount of them. The sopranoes pushed out all their phrases and made sure they didnt overpower the altos. The entire choir stayed aware of the piano and blended well. Although the choir performance was exceptional, at the beginning they was fidgeting alot and it was a distraction. Also, everyone was in uniform and well uniformed.

  39. The piece that I have been enjoying is “You Will Be Found” by Will Platt, Kristolyn Lloyd, Will Roland, Laura Dreyfuss and the Original Broadway cast of the play “Dear Evan Hansen”. This song is one that’s extremely beautiful and powerful. It is also an SATB arrangement, so it includes Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass parts. Every section is balanced by another and no one part overpowers any of the others.

The message of “You Will Be Found” is extremely powerful and whenever I listen to it, I’m automatically put in great spirit. This inspirational piece also holds great sentimental value to me. Last year at showcase, I opened the finale singing the beginning portion of the song. When I hear “You Will Be Found” it makes me think of the progression I’ve made musically and how far I’ve come. It makes me remember how important it is to continue moving forward.

  40. The good/great performance I chose is the Burbank show choir at 2017 nationals. I like the way they put several songs into one big epic performance. They also change the setting of each performance of a different song. They sounded really good for the most part and both their voices and dance moves were well in sync. Their soloists were out of breath here and there but it didnt really pertrude the great performance overall.

The second show choir ive chosen is WHS choir. They're well uniformed and their voices sound pretty good. They could blend a little better than they did. At some times I didn't here the tenors come in until at the last minute. Their choreography was a little off at times but overall it was good.

  41. The piece I chose is "You Will Win" by Jekalyn Carr. The genre of this song is gospel. The instruments that can be played for this song is guitars, and a piano. The altos And sopranos acapella was excellent, their voices blended very well with the occasional singing from the tenors and baritones who also harmonized greatly.
The song is very unique. The are some parts of the song that could have been arranged better. Also the phrases could have been longer to make the flow of the song stronger .There were some parts that could have been stronger to support the soloist on certain notes . This song is very spiritual and upbeat .
