Folk Songs

A folk song is a song originating among the people of a country or area, passed by oral tradition from one singer or generation to the next, often existing in several versions, and marked generally by simple, modal melody and stanzaic, narrative verse.

In other words, a song that has been passed down from generation to generation. Each culture has its own folk songs. There's American folk, English folk, Irish, Spanish, etc.

Today, there are numerous arrangements of folk songs written in different styles and sung by many musicians. Here is an arrangement of one of my favorite folk songs, "Scarborough Fair," by Simon and Garfunkel.

Now, find any folk song (you may need to do some research and listening on the Internet) and post it in the comments below. Remember not to post the same song as someone else, and spelling and grammar will count! Posts are due by February 24, 2017, 11:59 pm. No late posts will be accepted. Include a link to your video.

  1. The folks song that I picked for this blog post is “The Water is Wide”. It is also called “ O Waly, Waly”. It is a folk song of Scottish Orgin. Cecil Sharp published the song in Folk Songs From Somerset. It is related to Child Ballad 204. We are also currently singing this song in choral.

  2. The folk song I decided on is "This Land is your Land". The version I listened to is by the man who wrote it, Woody Guthrie. It is sometimes referred to as an alternative national anthem. It is an American folk song, and you can tell by the lyrics and what it represents. People should listen to this song more because it seems that some people have seemed to forget that America doesn't belong to any specific race or religion.

  3. There are many classic folk songs that everyone know. One of my favorites is “Home On the Range”. It is a western folk song, sometimes called the "unofficial anthem" of the American West. The lyrics were originally written by Dr. Brewster M. Higley in a poem entitled "My Western Home". It later became the state song of Kansas. I first heard this song when I was a toddler because a rocking horse that I had would play the song and I loved it. This will always be one of my favorite folk songs.

  4. Irish folk songs are one of many genres of music that i listen to. One song in particular that i enjoy listening to is "Red Is The Rose" by The High Kings. It is an A Capella piece which, to me, adds to the song's character. The song is about a couple who wants to get married, but they cannot be together because the girl is leaving Ireland. It is kind of a sad song, but I still enjoy listening to it. There are many versions of this song, but The High Kings's version is my personal favorite.

  5. My favorite traditional American folk song is "Shenandoah". I remember singing this song in my middle school choir and i have loved it every since. This particular cover is sung by Peter Hollens and he sings it so smoothly and it's the type of song you get stuck in your head for a while. I believe this song as been around since the mid 19th century and it is still a likeable song today.

  6. The folk song that I chose is "Arirang". This is the song that all Koreans hold dear to their hearts North and South. It is said that this song unites all Koreans together. I personally like this song because it shows the traditional way of singing in Korea as well as their spirit for their country.

  9. The song I chose is "Kingdom Coming," by Henry Clay, an European American abolitionists. Songs about emancipation allowed African American artists to express positive views about African Americans on the minstrel show stage. While often using language that would be considered unacceptable today, these songs nevertheless allowed African American performers to stand before white audiences and sing of the joy of freedom.

  10. The song I chose is "Hush Little Baby," written and first released by The Weavers in 1951. Hush Little Baby is a Traditional English folk song, thought to be written in the southern United States. The lyrics promise all kinds of rewards to the child if he/she is quiet. This song was performed by many different artists including Aretha Franklin. Being nice and on your best behavior gets you many things such as toys, anything you wish to have. Parents use this song to raise their children the right way and hopefully, those children would turn out nice and on their best behavior.

  11. The folk song I chose is "We Shall Overcome".It is a gospel song which became a protest song and a key part of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. The song is known to have come from "I'll Overcome Some Day", a hymn by Charles Albert Tindley that was first published in 1900. I chose this song in remembrance of Black history month.

  12. I chose the folk song, "Trouble So Hard" by Vera Hall. The lyrics talk about life being hard and the Lord being the only one who knows all the troubles black people had to endure. This folk song was popular during times of segregation and black oppression. An African American woman sings this hymn in which she tells a story; alliteration is used where she says multiple times "trouble so hard, don't nobody know my troubles but God."

  14. The song I chose is " Wade In The Water" by Eva Cassidy. Because many slaves knew the secret meanings of these songs,it could be used to signal many things. One example, could be Harriet Tubman used the song “Wade in the Water” to tell escaping slaves to get off the trail and into the water to make sure the dogs slavecatchers used couldn't sniff out their trail. Tubman also used slave songs to relay other messages. She would tell them to hide and wait for her signal. If she came back and sang one song two times, they would know it was safe to come out of hiding.

  15. The song that I chose was "Go tell it on the Mountain". It was sung by Margie Butler. I normally listen to the church version of the song so when I was singing along I got a bit confused. Many people may have heard the song mostly when they were kids. I like the instruments that are played in the background which sounds like a banjo. It also sounds like somebody rubbing a can.

  18. A folk song that I like and have sung is "Tshotsholoza". It is a Ndebele folk song what is now Zimbabwe. It was sung by mine workers which use a method of call and response. It mixed the languages of the Zulu and Ndebele groups. I love the song because of the hardy undertone of the men and it feels celebratory. The instruments used are primarily drums to keep the beat as the song is in acapella.

  19. The song I chose for this blogpost is called "El Corrido De Cananea (Ballad of Cananea)". It is a Spanish folk song, and I find it quite charming. It has a nice swing to it. I found the song within an online list of Spanish folk songs, but I found a version of the song on YouTube done by Linda Ronstadt. Her voice goes wonderfully with this song. The instruments plus her voice make this a really fantastic piece, even if I don't understand what's being sung.

  21. The folk song that I chose for this assignment was a love folk song by Roberta Flack called " First Time Ever I Saw Your Saw Face ". I like this song because you can hear the pain and sorrow in her voice as she sings it. I really like the fact that she is playing the piano because it brings out the soul in the song and it all pulls together and it sounds really good. I also hear what sounds like string instruments and they all sound really good. It is about the first time she ever saw the love of her life and the happiness she felt.

  22. The song I chose is a song that we have sung in the Men's Ensemble which is "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair." The song is a folk song originating from most likely from Scotland, but was first heard in the Appalachian Mountain region of the US in about 1915. The theory of it being Scottish was backed by Alan Lomax, a musicologist who said it was American "re-make of British materials."

  23. The song that I chose was " Black is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" the version that I chose is by Nina Simone. Our men's choir has done this song in a different arrangement and I really like it because it simply just sounds good. Nina's version is really peaceful and soulful and if you know me, you know I love a soulful voice. And Nina Simone's voice is soulful period and the way she plays the piano it makes me really think like wow she has been through it.

The song I chose for this weeks blogpost is Amazing Grace. I really do enjoy hearing performers sing this song. I love this song and I hope everyone else does as well. It's one of the select few folk songs that I know. The Celtic Woman's cover/version of this song is so awesome. I recommend that any and everybody listen to it right now. I promise, that their beautiful performance will have you on the edge of your seat, and wanting more.

  25. "Ms. Mary Mack" is a folk song that alot of children know. I remember singing this with friends while playing and giggling. It is a clapping game played by children in English-speaking countries like the US, Canada, Australia, the Uk, New Zealand, and is considered the most common clapping game in the English-speaking world.

  26. Because Xavier took my song and posted it before me the new song I chose is called " Little Liza Jane " by Nina Simone. I like this song because it is catchy and it is just really nice to listen to. The tempo of the is upbeat and with the instruments in it make for a well written song. There is a tambourine, snapping, and what sounds like a bass guitar and all these things combined with Nina Simone's soulful voice brings out a smile on anyone's face.

  27. I chose O Tannenbaum origonaly by Joachim August Christian Zarnack. Most people know the american versian that is a christmas carol. But needless to say it was origonaly a german folk song. Also the song was not about christmas tannenbaum means fur tree not christmas tree. In the song it takes about how fathfull and consistand the tree is and how it is always green even in the winter. I chose this song because my mom is from germany but I am much so proud to be an american so I chose a song with a german origin that has been americanized.

  28. The folk song I have chosen for this week's blog assignment is "One Hundred Million Years" by M. Ward. I like this song a lot because it is short and straight to the point. However despite what you may have thought, it loses none of its musical and lyrical value. The point of the song is that he has loved someone for a long time, longer "than that burning ball of fire up in the sky" has existed and he will continue to love this person for one hundred million years. Which I think is really awesome, that despite all the distractions that may come along and try to disrupt their relationship he still only loves his partner, no matter how hard this distraction may try. I also think the guitar adds a really good feeling of just playing around with my instrument. You can really tell that the musician was just enjoying playing his guitar. Just like I enjoyed listening to this song.

  29. I song that I chose for this is by Mumford And Sons and it is called "Lover of the Light". There is a piano, guitar, and drums in this song and I really like it. The vocals from the singers and the music alone make you fall in love with it. There is nothing I can really say about the song because it simply speaks for itself.

  30. One of my favorite folk songs is "Keep On the Sunny Side." is a popular American song originally written in 1899 by Ada Blenkhorn (1858–1927) with music by J. Howard Entwisle. The song was popularized in a 1928 recording by the Carter Family. A recording of the song with The Whites was featured in the 2000 movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?. It is a very nice song and sounds great, also I love country music.

  31. The folk song that I chose was catch the wind.Donavon wrote this when he was 18, and was immediately hyped up as the new Bob Dylan. It didn’t work out that way, and his career took a different course, but this remains a classic folk song. This song has a very nice tune and its very spectacular.
