This week we are looking at potential pieces for the spring semester. Good performances are created when all elements of music (tone quality, dynamics, pitch, duration) are in perfect harmony with each other. What makes this choir sound good? Is there anything can be better? Listen to this piece "Non Nobis Nomine" by Dr. Rosephanye Powell of Auburn University and write a paragraph about the following: use of dynamics, tone, balance between voices, overall performance. Your paragraph must be at least 5 sentences long, use complete sentences, correct grammar, and contribute to good discussion. No simple sentences such as "It sounded good" or " I liked the dynamics" will be acceptable. All posts must be made by 11:59 pm on Friday, 1/29/16. Form your own opinion and do not use other classmate's ideas in your writing. No late work will be accepted. Verify that your post actually posts before Friday and do not wait until Friday to write your post.

ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master Singers sang this song very well. Their tone quality was very rich and round. The song was in a higher pitch, and the dynamics of the song was mostly medium-loud. Their diction was perfect and the staccato of the soprano's voices was beautiful. Their overall performance was great.
The Sacramento Masters Singers did an outstanding job on their performance. The dynamics went from soft to medium to loud throughout the song. To include, the Sacramento Masters Singers did very well on articulating and using crescendo and decrescendo on words, such as, "Non Nobis Domine".The choir also made their words taller, such as my last example I made. I wished that the Altos would sing a little bit louder to match with the Sopranos. The men in the beginning of the song, were on point and were pretty precise.Lastly, I didn't like the fact that half of them were rocking side to side and the other half were standing still. There are certain songs that you can rock to side to side, but this isn't one of them. The tone quality of this performance was very rich. Overall, the choir did very well and I will give them a 9/10 on their performance.
ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master Singers did excellent on this piece. There was a good balance between their voices, but sometimes throughout the song a section would drown out the others. The dynamics were great during the entire performance. The tone quality was very powerful. There was good diction, pitch, and breath support. The overall performance was amazing.

It's diffcult to find great sounding choirs such as this. Honestly it was almost impossible to find a hearable flaw in the Sacramento Master Singers performance. One thing I can note is that their posture was terrible as many moved very erratically. Other than that I loved the dynamics and resonance used throughout the song. I feel the ending was weak compared to the beginning as it did not end with a "bang" but instead a quick cutoff. The overall performance was great and enjoyable to listen too. -Hobbie
ReplyDeleteThe choir was very uniformed with everything that they sang throughout the performance. Every word was very precise when pronounced. Not only was their diction superb, but their facial expressions while performing were also great and showed how much they enjoyed singing Non nobis. The dynamics of swelling and gradually getting louder were amazingly clean. The Sacramento Master Singers gave an excellent performance. -Monique Thomas

ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master Singers performance was very entertaining and quite impressive. This choir was very professional in both their physical appearance and their sound. The sounds of every person in the choir were very strong and intriguing. They had a great tone, and you could also understand the words clearly as they were singing. However, the choir's posture was horrible, and they were moving a lot during the performance. In conclusion,The Sacramento Master Singers gave an excellent performance.
The Sacramento Master Singers perfance to me didnt have alot of flaws but i did find one and that they were a little off beat with the rocking. The sopranos were every loud you could understand every word they was sayin throughout the song. I liked the fact that the altos Moved along with the song. The whole choir was in sync throughtout the song. It seemed as if they enjoyed singing because their facial expression were all together.they was into the song. The dynamics and Tone of the choir was together. The pitches were amazing how they gradually increase throughtout the song overall i enjoyed this choir-Tondrea Bryant
ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master Singers song this piece very well. The dynamics were amazing. My favorite part was when it was a sections time to sing their part the section prior to would decrescendo so you could hear. I believe that was very impressive. One thing I would've changed were the dresses they just didn't look right to me. Overall the performance was great and the sound was perfect.

The Sacramento Master Singers did a amazing job. The only thing I could point out was them moving so much throughout the song. They had a great tone and pronounced their words precisely. Everyone in the choir had some sort of facial expressions that made me enjoy the song even though I don't know it, their facial expressions really just pulled me in. They also had a great balance and they didn't over sing one another. Their dynamics were very clean and really flowed together as well. Over all they did a wonderful job singing Non Nobis and listening to it was very enjoyable. -Emiaya K.
ReplyDeleteThe choir, the Sacramento Master singers, performed very well. Their tone was very round and crisp. They also had a nice balance between each section, no one over-powered the others. Also, their stage presence was very noticeable. No one was standing with a blank face, every one had some sense of enjoyment. The only downfall of this performance is their movements. Honestly, they could do without them. Overall, the choir was great and I was very pleased with the performance. ~Kennon Watkins
ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master Singers did an awesome job. The choir had a very clear and clean sound. At some points in the song is sounded almost as though it was one person because it was blended so well. The dynamics were great in my opinion because you could tell that everything flowed together. I thought the performance was very entertaining and the only downside in my opinion was that som people were moving and others weren't which made it look a little off. All in all I enjoyed the performance and thought the choir did great.

The Sacramento Master singers did a great performance. They round all vowels and got all constants out clearly. They had good dynamics because nothing was chopped up everything went together. They had great posture and everyone was smiling. They could work on where they take a breathe ,but all parts were together.I think the performance was great, and I enjoyed watching it.

The Sacramento Master Singers performed very well and looked well doing it.The sound was very loud and strong. The dynamics were heard very clear and it was easy to hear a crescendo or decrescendo. The duration was very fast tempo which made the song not very long. Most of the pitches were very high for the sopranos (women) but all were good. All together the choir sounds amazing and most of them looked as if they wanted to be up performing.

The tone and balance of voices makes this choir sound good. The male voices could have blended better. The male voices did not come together on the first note which makes it sound awkward. The use of dynamics in this song was good. They master the dynamics in a way that sounds natural. The choir overall performance was great. They sang in such a way that made you feel the emotion of this song.

I loved the piece because it exercised all of the aforementioned qualities. They utilized their dynamics in a very advanced way, and contrast in their dynamics for each specific part gave their piece a lot of color. There tone quality was stupendous. Although it started out pretty questionably, it was one of the greatest things about the piece. The chords sounded very pure and practiced. The balance also gave this piece its good sound. The parts worked together to produce an overall effect of balance among the voices. Their overall performance was superb sound-wise, however I saw some of them moving and rocking as they were singing and it did not look clean and organized. However, the sound makes up for that having good musical qualities and excellent choral elements throughout the piece.

The choir did a really good job. They were very blended and in sync. They had a very full and dramatic sound. The faces they were making did not fit the song. It was a very dramatic and dark song and they tried to make it light by smiling, but they should have looked more serious. All in all, the choir did a really good job. - Elijah Guidry
ReplyDeleteI did not like how the choir sounded. It was very weak for how powerful they should have been. The song was a very passionate and deep type of song and they did not sing it like it was supposed to be sung. Their facial expressions were very nice. They all were smiling and looking very excited to be singing a song that they did not do well on. - Courtney Jones
ReplyDeleteThe choir sang exceptionally well in the video. Their dynamics, to me, were perfect. I could clearly hear each part. The men were in sync with one another. They were not sloppy and used good punctuality. Their facial expressions were good; they showed excitement. I thought they actually did pretty good.
ReplyDeleteAs I was watching the video, the first thing that caught my attention was their posture. I could not help but notice that they were swaying from side to side, but in different directions. As they began singing, I noticed that the dynamics in the song were great. It was easy to identify which parts in the sing had a dramatic intention. I must give credit to the success of blending their voices. It takes a skilled and determined individual to be able to balance their voice with others without overpowering one another. Overall, their performance was amazing. I was amazed by the balance, yet dramatic feel I received when I hearing them perform.

I really enjoyed the choir's performance. They had a nice full rich sound. Their dynamics were on point and great articulation. Their tone was more mezzo forte throughout. Overall they had a nice balance with great facial expressions. kaylizzle (makaylia)
ReplyDeleteThe performance was actually a great performance overall. In the beginning I noticed the moving from side to side wasn't together. People were moving in opposite directions or were not moving at all. Their facial expressions were good. The dynamics were very clear so each part (Alto, Soprano, Tenor, and Bass) was heard and blended well. The tone was rich and round sounding with in my opinion complimented the song well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the performance that this choir gave. The dynamics that they gave were great and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. However they could have been a little louder and project more so that everyone could hear. I also believe that when they were coming off the risers they could have been a little bit more professional and not have everyone just walk off the risers. Nevertheless, I liked this performance a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe performance was good overall. The sound was very strong and clear. Posture could have been a little bit better. Choir members were moving around too much. Their facial expression was on point. It was a good choice of song. Jahmai W
ReplyDeleteThe choir was great! They had a celestial sound, the balance, diction, dynamics, everything was perfect. I especially loved how other parts decrcendo so that a new part could be heard. The only thing I had a problem with was the moving. It seemed as if it were without purpose, which should never be done. But overall a great performance.
ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento Master singers did an astonishing performance. They were very well blended together and mad e the song come together in one piece. Their dynamics were spot on on some keys more less then none. The choir had a very nice rich tone going on during the performance to make it sound nice overall. Sacramento choir harmony was good They knew when to come in on their sections and how long to old the note. I fill as if they sounded as one whole group, and that is how a choir is supposed to sound. However, like most choirs they did have some things they need to work o. This choir did not show any facial expression. In choir, in order to sell what you're sinning and make it sound interesting. You have to show that your are interested yourself. Also, they were swaying a little. In a performance you stand tall and straight to give off a good appearance. This choir harmony was good but they didn't use a lot of crescendo to make this piece sound taller and fuller as it should. Overall, the choir sounded good but it still needs to work out some little details.

The Sacramento Master Singers were worth watching. Their balance was extremely beautiful as well as their dynamics, diction, intonation, and stage presence. Though the individuals rocking was slightly distracting, it went with the beat of the music. They are certainly a group whose performances I will be looking for on youtube.
ReplyDelete-DeAndrea
This choir sounded absolutely wonderful. Their balance between parts was great as well as their dynamics. Their diction and harmonies were beautiful, unlike anything I'd ever heard before. This performance was great but everyone has room to improve. Now what that is, is the movement, if the movement has doesn't have a purpose then it shouldn't be done. Even though it went with the beat, it still distracts the audience from what they are supposed to be paying attention to

The Sacramento Master Singers gave a great performance. Their diction, dynamics, tone quality was great. The thing that caught my attention while I was watching the performance, was some performers on stage were moving side to side and others were still in place. That did not look good professional. it would of been a better performance if every one was still and smiling. I also noticed that after they bowed and were getting of the risers, everyone just was coming of the risers at once.Over all it was a great performance just a few minor details that they need to work out.
ReplyDelete-Joselim Munoz
I adored this performance like everything they did was great. Their diction, dynamics, and intonation was wonderful. The multiple people rocking was distracting, however I was too busy thinking about how good they sounded to be bothered by it. I would most definitely like to see more of their performances if they sound this good. This is how Latin music is supposed to sound!

This selection the Sacramento Masters Singers choose was an excellent selection. Their pitches were on point and precise. There were only two things that I did not really like in the performance. One would be that I know that it sounded really pretty and they had a good pitch but, I just could not understand what they were saying! Two I wish they made an agreement to rock side-to-side or just stand still, because what it looks like some people really enjoyed, some kind of liked it, and others because they need they sung in a choir on their resume. But other than that I really and truly like listening to their dynamics! It really blew me away.
ReplyDeleteThe choir was absolutely wonderful. They had a nice round and mature tone. The song selection was perfect for the style of the singers. They showed a lot of expression and where very animated in their singing. Overall they did a wonderful job and I would like to her more.
ReplyDelete-Kelly Williams
The Sacramento Masters Singers were amazing. The dynamics were very loud and clear. Although, I did not like that the Altos were barely heard. I heard Sopranos entirely, but that was the only problem I saw out of this performance. Overall, it was fantastic!
ReplyDelete-Kiana W.
This choir was very talented. They prepared their air, supported their sound, and let their vowels be round. They let their expressions be seen. While they sounded nice, the rocking was unnecessary because it distracted from the music. As always, there are things they need to work on. Overall, it was pretty ok.
ReplyDelete-Lindsey K.
The choir was absolutely remarkable! They had such a rich and full tone even on the softer parts of the song. Their crescendos, decrescendos, and other dynamics were clear and executed perfectly. You could tell their forte from their piano and their diction was excellent. They over-enunciated, had crisp cut offs, and clean consonants. No one person could be heard over the others, and no section was too loud or boisterous. They are obviously a well taught group of students who not only sing but feel the music too. Their voices blend beautifully together and their passion for music can be felt by the audience. I truly enjoyed them.

The Sacramento Master Singers did a very nice job. They did really well when transitioning into the different dynamic levels from soft, medium, and loud and so on. At some parts the women were drowned out by the men. I think it would be better if they stood still. With all the head movements they had going on it made them look less uniformed.Although, they did blend nicely together and their facial expressions added to their great performance.
ReplyDelete~Katherine Miles
The choir did an outstanding job with their performance. Everyone was on one accord, and paying attention to the director. The balance between the different voices were well blended together, also there were a lot of facial expressions being shown. Their dynamics were very well heard; you could understand the pronunciation of all the words there was no slurring of the words. Also their constants were very clean, they as well had crisp cut offs and their harmony was very well. In all I believe their performance was really nice and I was very pleased after watching this video.

I think The Sacramento Master Singers are a very good choir. They also did a marvelous job with this performance. Their dynamics were great and the sopranos sounded excellent. With some, choirs it is difficult to understand but that was not the case with this choir. I was able to understand what they were saying perfectly. Also, they used crescendo a lot throughout the performance but I believe they did a really good job with it. They performance was great. Amaria Cato
ReplyDeleteI believe the Sacramento Master Singers performed outstandingly. This choir showed that they put in a lot of time training and practicing. They showed elegance with their dynamics and diction while singing. The choir was very thorough and thoughtful with the song through their performance. I believe the choir did a very excellent and professional job. They are well balanced and trained.
