Welcome

Welcome to the BTW Magnet Choral Department Blog. Feel free to look around and see what we have been discussing.

Friday, November 7, 2014

As we prepare for Christmas and the holidays, one major choral work that we will learn is "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah by Handel. This piece has various layers of musical writing to it--homophony, polyphony, accompanied music, etc. Listen to three different recordings of the work by three different choirs. As you listen, note the following: how the tempo changes from performance to performance, the sound of the various choirs, whether there is an orchestra or a piano, and any other musical element present. The following questions/responses need to be addressed in your two paragraph written response: 1) Does the performance sound better or worse when it is a full orchestra? Piano alone? 2) Is the choirs diction clear? (In other words, are the words clearly understood in each voice part?) If not, how can it be made better? 3) What is one thing that will make the performances better? Be specific and list one thing for each of the three videos you watch. 4) You must listen to at least one (1) video that that has piano accompaniment and no orchestra. You must also listen to a total of three (3) videos and include the YouTube link in order to receive credit for your listening. All listening is due by Friday, November 14, 2014, 11:59 pm. Below is a video example. This video cannot be used as one of your listening examples for this assignment.

  1. The first choir sounded very well and I wish that they can work on their diction, especially with the tenors in the choir. The tenors weren't that loud enough and sounds a little bit flat. They needed to get up there to match the pitch with everybody else as well. For the basses, their voices were very good and they stood out more than the tenors in my opinion. The tenors needs to articulate the words and open their mouth when they are singing any songs.
The second choir, I have to say that their orchestra was on point. The choir articulated and used strong diction in their words such as, "Hallelujah". In addition, they used their facial expressions throughout the song which was very neat. Lastly, the third were good in my opinion. It could have been better with the words precisely. Overall, all three of the performances were good and there were some strengths and weaknesses in the performances, too.

  2. I really enjoyed listening to the different choirs performing “Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah by Handel. Each choir that I listened to had good and bad qualities. I personally enjoyed the full orchestra performances instead of the piano only performance. The full orchestra gave the song better quality and made it more exciting. The piano alone wasn’t a bad performance it just didn’t sound as well as the full orchestra. The diction in the second and third performance was better than the one in the first. The diction could have been made better by them pronouncing the words more clear. The words to me were jumbled together.
Each of the performances had their good and their bad qualities. The first one could’ve been made better if they had better diction. The performance would have also been better if they had some type of dress code and didn’t all have different clothes on. The second one was my favorite out of the three. The diction was great and they did well with dynamics. I couldn’t find anything wrong with this performance. The third one was also a great performance. This performance could’ve been better if the instruments didn’t over power the choir as much. The choir needed to be louder or the instruments needed to be quieter. In my opinion the third choir was also kind of all over the place. I enjoyed all three performances.

  3. The song sounds a whole lot better with a full orchestra. Even with the piano alone it still does not sound as great as a full orchestra. The choirs’ diction was clear and they pronounced every word really well. The first performance could have had a lot more singers in it but otherwise it was very enjoyable. The second performance could have had a few more instruments so that it would perform well. The last performance could have been a bit louder and have more instruments.

  4. The "Hallejujah Chours" from Messiah by Handel did a good job over all but they were not perfect.During the performance I think it sound better when it is not a full orchestra.I say that because the diction was better when there were less people singing. Most other the time they were just over singing each other. So,I have to say it sound better piano alone. One thing that I really notice is the lack of diction. The words were loud but you could not under stand them and, they were running all together an not sounding right.Instead of singing the words loud, they could have took the time an learned all the words an pronounced them right. For the first performance, they could have took breaths in the right places. For the second performance, they could have all been matching. They had very poor appearance. For the third choir, they were actually good but still have to work on there diction.Overall,I really enjoyed watching these choirs because they were different and interesting.

  6. I really enjoyed listening to the different choirs performing “Hallelujah Chorus". Every choir that I listened to had both good and bad qualities. I them all but i think the full Orchestra was the best. The choirs' diction was very clear and i understood all of the words they were saying. The choir articulated well and used strong diction in their words. They also shaped there lips in the form of the vowels they were singing.
The second choir's diction was great and they also did well with dynamics. I didn't find any flaws in this performance. The third one was also a great performance. This performance could’ve been better if the instruments played a littled softer. Overall all three choirs did well.

  7. The Handel Messiah - Hallelujah Chorus was excellent to me. They were hands down my favorite. They sounded great but there diction was a little bad because i couldn't completely understand what they were saying, but they sounded wonderful despite that. Pronouncing the words alittle better is the only thing that could have made the performance better but i honestly cant understand the words in any of the choirs other than "Hallelujah."
The second choir was also very great, they sounded great there diction was okay even though i still dont know what there saying, i think its just me. There is nothing they should change, it was good minus the diction...The third choir was my least favorite but they were also good, minus the diction of course but theirs was a little worse then the other two choirs. If they practiced on diction there performance would be much better. Overall all three choirs were good.

  8. The choirs that I listened sounded good. The first two choirs I listened too were accompanied by an orchestra, the third by just a piano. In my opinion, the song sounds much better with an orchestra accompanying than it does with just a piano. The first choirs' ,whom was accompanied by an orchestra, diction was superb I understood every word they said. I understood what was in English and when they were saying something that was in Latin (It sounded like Latin so don't quote me).
They pronounced every word they said clearly. The second choir's, whom was also accompanied by an orchestra, diction was also really good. I kinda wish that there were a little more people singing though. But, aside from all that, they also pronounced everything clearly and I was able to tell what was English and what wasn't. The third choir, however, didn't have as great as diction as I would have liked. I couldn't understand anything they said and it kind of bothered me. I wish that if they were gonna sing something a piece if this nature that they would have practice mor on how to pronounce the syllables in the song so it would sound you garbled up to the audience. for both the first and second choir, I would suggest that they have more balance between the choir and the orchestra, forinstance, at point of the song in the second video, I think the men were supposed to be singing but I couldn't hear them. But, if that was just supposed to be a decrescendo then it was superb. Overall all three choirs were good, some better than others though.

  9. The Chorus sounds better with the orchestra. There is a more full sound than with the piano. The Orchestra gives the song a more lively feeling. When it is played with the piano it is played freely. The tempo changes tremendously when played on the piano. It is extremely fast on the piano. The words are not as clear when played on the piano. When played with the orchestra it is very easy to understand and the dynamics are performed well. The performance with the Orchestra was very well there were no corrections needed to this performance. The performance with the piano needed to be slowed down and the diction could have been better.

  10. The three choirs I listened too were good. The first two choirs had an orchestra playing with them. The third just had piano. Based on what I heard the song sounds better with an orchestra, but that could be just because of the video that I watched with just the piano. The first choir's diction was good as well as the second, they pronounced their words clearly and I was able to tell when they were singing in English and when they weren't. The third choir's diction wasn't as good as I feel that they should have been. In my opinion the first to choirs just need to work on balancing their sound with the sound of the orchestra that was playing with them. As for the third choir, they should practice more on how to shape their mouth to sing certain vowels so that when they sing the song it doesn't come out as a garbled up peie of mess. But overall I enjoyed this week's listening.

  11. The first choir sounded good. However, their were a some weaknesses in their performance. I feel the choir would sound better if they had a piano instead of an orchestra. Also, the tenors were note a string as they should be. Their diction was ok, not the best. The last critique for them is their words could have been pronounced clearer. The second choir also was good. In that choir they had kids in the soprano section instead of strong soprano women. Their diction however was very good. Lastly, the orchestra fit them very well. The last choir was very good in my opinion. The piano fit them . Their fullness could use a little work but overall, they were pretty good.

  13. I listened to two choirs with an orchestra and one accompanied by piano only. I personally feel like it sounds much better when done with an orchestra because it adds energy to the song. The first choir I listened to was accompanied by piano only.Their diction could have been better and they needed to work on their articulation when making vowel sounds. Also there are a lot of different parts where the choir breaks up in sections and they did not do so well coming back in together. My other two choirs were both accompanied with an orchestra and they sounded great. Both choirs had superb diction and articulated their words very well. It was very pleasing to listen to. Even with all the different pitches, not once did I feel irritated listening to them. The choir was in tune with the orchestra. I enjoyed listening to all three choirs but I enjoyed listening to the last choir the most.

  16. The song sounds way better with an orchestra versus with just a piano. The first two choirs had really great diction. They had tall vowels and pronounced their words very clearly. The third choir however, had really poor diction. I could barely understand what they were saying and it got pretty annoying. I honestly think that the third choir should work on pronouncing each syllable before they perform another song of this nature. The first two choirs should work on the balance between their sound and the sound of the orchestra that way they aren't overpowering the orchestra and vice versa. Overall I liked this weeks listening

  17. This song is really good. This song sounds way better with an orchestra rather than with just a piano. Its just that the orchestra gives the song more of a full sound. The diction of the first choir was great. I understood everything they said. They had tall vowels and they were balanced. The second choir also had good diction, though not as good as the first, but still good. They pronounced every vowel good but some parts I couldn't understand. The third choir by far had the worst diction. I couldnt understand anything they were saying at all. It may be because they are a church choir but it was still pretty bad. The first choir should work on their balance with the orchestra. The third coir should just work on balance all together. The third choir needs to work on their diction the most cause that's what really bothered me. Overall I liked listening to these.

  18. This is a really beautiful song. The song sounds way better with an orchestra because it gives the song an entirely different sound and feel. The first two choirs had excellent diction. The pronounced their vowels clearly and I understood them. The third choir had horrible diction. I was lost the entire time they were performing because of how bad their diction was. They need to work on balance, vowel sounds, consonant sounds, and diction. The first two choirs need to work on balance because at some parts I could bareky hear them because of how low their accompaniment was.But overall good performances.

  20. The first choir sounded great and the diction was very clear, but the tenors need to sing out more. I enjoyed the second choir performance from the Messiah by Handel. Each section was heard, and the diction was well understood. The third choir sound great, but their diction was not understood. I think the song sounds better with an orchestra accompaniment than piano because the song sounds darker and fuller.
With the first choir, the tenors should sing out more, and some of the choir should make sure their mouths are open taller for better vowel sounds. The second choir should work on their posture. The third choir should work on their diction, by watching how they articulate the words.y favorite choir was Harlem Gospel Choir that performed the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah by Handel. All of the choirs had its strengths and weaknesses, but I enjoyed all of them.

  21. The three video performances were great. You could hear the words very clear. The diction was great and really stands out when many
instruments play. I like the full orchestra rather than the piano alone, it just brings the song together.None of the performances
    need a critical fix.

The performance of "Radio City Music Hall:Johann Strauss Orchestra and the Harlem Gospel Choir": http://youtu.be/76RrdwElnTU
was amazing the words were well heard and the orchestra was excellent.

The performance of "Mormon Tabernacle Choir": http://youtu.be/KnQGs24U1e8
was a creative mix of singing, playing, and videography ,showing little by little the work put in for this performance.

The performance of "Fraser Valley Young Adults Choir": http://youtu.be/CUBDg7-Hv6Y
attacked the song with confidence and skill. Even without an orchestra they carried themselves well with the piano.

  22. This song sounds better with a orchestra. With the orchestra its gives the song a creative and entirely differnt feel. Out of the three choirs my overall favorite would have to be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There diction was excellent also the St. Martin Choir. The last choir diction was awful. It was hard to understand what they were saying. The first two choirs should work on the balance between their sound and the sound of the orchestra. The third choir really needs to work on there diction mainly. Overall i enjoyed listening to all the choirs. It is also a pretty cool song.

  23. This song is very beautiful. In order to fulfill the full beauty of it, however, it should be sung with an orchestra. in my opinion, in sounds much better than with the piano. These three videos were very intereresting to watch. Although, they all had something wrong with them.
One of the videos had boys as participants of the choir. The intonation of these young boys was superb. The only draw-back was their diction. Some of them had excellent diction, while others did not. They took away from the impact of the choir as a whole. The other choir that I watched also had great inotation, but not as great diction. In, this case, the whole choir refused to have tall vowels. The last video that I watched was of a flash mob that performed this song. Their intonation and diction was great! The only bad thing was their timing. They sand a little slow. They sang with an organ. I am assuming that it was a recording. All of these videos were very entertaining and well done. They all sounded great although they had bad aspects. The good aspects made up for the bad.

  24. The three videos I watched were good, but they had some things that needed to be worked on. The first performance I watched was good. They had good dynamics at times and were great at following the director. However, at times, they were overpowered by the music so they need to work on a full sound. The second one was alright. They needed better diction, I had a hard time understanding what they were saying. Also, they weren't uniformed, they would have looked much better if everyone was wearing the same thing. The last video was the best out of the three in my opinion. The choir had a very mature sound and they were smiling. They looked like they enjoyed being there singing. Everything came together perfectly and you can tell they worked hard on the song. I like the full orchestra better than just the piano. Orchestras are more exciting and are much more difficult to fall asleep to.

  25. The first choir was a flash mob and they did a good job. They were accompanied by just a piano in a food court at the mall. The next choir sung A-Capella and they were spectacular in my opinion. They were synchronized and were clear sounding. The last choir was accompanied by a full orchestra and they had a small choir, but their sound seemed like it was hundreds of them. To avoid any mistakes in timing it would probably be best to do it A- Capella. The diction of the first choir wasn't that bad but should have been much better. The second and third choir had well diction but there is always room for improvement.
The first choir should have been more organized because when the people were arising from the crowd it looked kind of odd because they had to many people standing in one area and they were singing right in the people's ear and I know if it was I who was there I wouldn't want some person blowing my eardrums out with all that loud singing. The second choir could have sounded a little more full because of the parts where they had rest they sounded dead and it drew away from how they sounded to why is there silence? The third choir, in my opinion didn't need any improvement, but they could have been a little more mixed because they had the black people to one side and the white people to the other and all of the sopranos were all white. Now it could have been a part of their theme, but that's none of my business.

  26. I think that this song cannot be sung without an orchestra and song correct. In the first two videos, the men's diction was extremely clear while the sopranos... not so much. The sopranos definitely need to work with opening there mouth (i think) so that the words are properly audible. Same with the second video. Also, the mall flash mob one could have gone with the vibrator because it didn't sound right at all. The uniform of the first two choirs was spot on. Also, for the situation, the flash mobs "uniform" fit well. The first two choirs did AWESOME for there song. I actually didn't like the flash mobs because of said vibrator. Oh, also, with the orchestra, you can better hear accompaniment over a loud choir and a soft piano.

  27. The first choir I watched was fairly interesting because it was a male choir. They did an exceptional job and they were accompanied by a small orchestra. They little kids did the higher soprano part while the older males did the lower part. They were in synch and had very good diction. The second choir was a flash mob and they were accompanied by a piano. I didn’t think they were all that well. They weren’t in synch and they weren’t blended. Their blend is what they most defiantly need to work on.
The third choir a total failure because they came in at different times and they were A Cappella so they had nothing to mask their mistakes. Also, it was only four people so they didn’t have the full support they needed. They need to work on their diction because I could barely understand a word they were saying.

  28. The first choir I watched was terrible, they were so off tempo. What made it worse was that they were A Cappella. So you could hear all of their mistakes and they were so unclear that you could just barely understand what they were saying, I don’t know where to start with their improvements, but they could start with getting a choir and a band to play with them. The second choir was accompanied by a piano and they did a fair job, and their diction was clear. I felt like they could have been a little louder because on a few of the parts when, I’m guessing, they were supposed to be soft they were to soft because you could not hear them.
The third choir was really well and it was only a hand full of people. They were very clear and precise with the orchestra that accompanied them. Their diction was amazing, you could tell they were over- articulating their words. I feel that this song would be best song with an orchestra not just a piano so that we are not exposed and naked so that when we mess up it isn’t heard as bad as if we were to sing it A Cappella.

  29. Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah by Handel is a beautiful piece of music, only when it is done properly! I can truly say that Hallelujah Chorus is performed at its best with a full orchestra! A piano is great, but a full orchestra will help produce a full, bold, dynamic filled sound; with this song, you want to gain this joyous feeling that can only be done at its best with an orchestra. Diction is important while singing this song because it helps distinguish the difference between each hallelujah! The tempo marking is also essential when it comes to this particular song. There are parts where it needs to slow down to put emphasis on the words and other parts of the song needs to be faster.
The first choir did a fair job performing this song. I honestly think that this performance would be much better if they sung with clear diction. Due to their lack of diction, I say that the orchestra doesn't not enhance the performance because their sound drowns out the choir sound. If they would have song with better diction, the sound would have been much better. The second choir's diction was not great as well; tall vowel sounds are key when performing this song. Their sound is lost within the orchestra, which is not a good thing because it is not an even blend. The choir is just awful! I am so grateful that the CMD does not sound like this whenever we sing! I can say that hearing this group that TALL VOWEL SOUNDS AND DYNAMICS ARE ESSENTIAL!!! The piano alone actually helped this choir because with an orchestra, it would sound like a train-wreck, sounding straight from "Down South: All of these choirs need to work on their diction and tall vowel sounds!

  30. The Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah by Handel is personally one of my favorite choir numbers. When put together, the chorus produces an amazing sound, almost as if it is truly being sent down from the Heavens. I believe an orchestra would further support a fuller sound of the Hallelujah chorus. An simple piano accompaniment might take away from the joyous, full sound this piece is meant to produce. Diction is extremely important while performing this piece due to not only the important lyrics, but the strong emphasis on certain words that should be portrayed in this number. The tempo is also important because it draws a specific line between parts where the movements should be fast or slow.
The first choir I watched was a flash mob that was not accompanied by a full orchestra, but a simple recording of an organ playing. The choir's diction was amazing, every word was comprehensible. The tempo changed when needed and each member was synchronized with one another. The second choir incorporated a full orchestra and the sound was much fuller. In addition, due to the increased amount of members, the diction did get a bit sloppier in comparison to the first choir. They still did an amazing job, however. The last choir I Watched was an all men's choir. Due to the lack of women's voices, the diction on this particular cover seemed to be especially emphasized. Each "A" in hallelujah was heard quite clearly.

  31. It is my belief that the Hallelujah Chorus, From Messiah by Friedrich Handel, sounds much better when accompanied by a full orchestra than with a partial orchestra, only a piano or organ, or no accompaniment at all. The first video, or recording, I listened to was performed by the English Concert and Choir. The choir had excellent dynamic control, and their diction as a whole was nearly spot-on. Their orchestra, however, became slightly too loud at some points, which drowned out the choir. I would recommend better dynamic control to the accompanying orchestra, and nothing more.

The second choir/orchestra I listened to, the Harlem Gospel Choir and Johann Strauss Orchestra, was also very good. However, their tempo was much faster, which led to words sounding more choppy and rushed. Dynamics throughout the piece were mostly the same, with variations only between large phrases and not throughout measures. Some vowels were over-accented, which gave the piece a sharper, more urgent feel. My only major concern for improvement is slowing everything down.

The third and final choir I listened to, the Philadelphia Romanian Church choir, was accompanied by an organ. Right away, I became aware of this choir's flat diction. It sounded like they were merely talking with drawn-out syllables and varying pitches, rather than singing with correct vowel and consonant pronunciation. Dynamics were mostly the same throughout the song, with little change throughout the piece. In order to improve, this choir should focus on taller vowels, rather than wider.

  32. Hallelujah Chorus is a very interesting song. It is a piece that is set at a high difficulty level, but can be done really well with time and practice put into it. The first video that I watched was pretty okay. I feel like if there was more added to it such as dynamics and better pitch, then there would have been a better affect on my opinion of it. The second video was much better. I liked the way they were so organized and they sounded as if they had actually practiced. The last video that I watched was in between good and bad. It had its moments where it was enjoyable and somewhere it wasn't. The instruments in all three were very different, but they all still had the same central sound which made them all the more enjoyable to watch.
