Listening Week of October 27 -31, 2014 This week’s listening activity deals with Tibetan Throat Singing, sometimes referred to as overtone singing. In this type of singing, individuals are able to manipulate the overtones that are naturally present in the voice, producing two tones at one time. Look at the following YouTube links in addition to some of your own and make a post on the class blog (http://btwcmd.blogspot.com) responding to the videos you watch. In your response, answer the following questions: 1. What is Tibetan Throat Singing? 2. What are some dangers of this method of singing? Benefits? (you will have to do a little research to answer this question) 3. What does the singing sound like to you? 4. How is this type of singing achieved? Is this something that you can train yourself to do? Responses need to total at least two paragraphs in length. All responses need to be made on the class blog site. These are due by Friday, October 31 no later than 11:59 pm. Late posts will not be accepted.

  2. Tibetan throat singing to me is a weird but unique way of singing. Its sounds as if someone is making dark instrument noises with their mouth. The sounds in tones they monks are making is very annoying. I can't imagine anyone doing or able to do this type thing. Tibetan Throat Singing is a overtone singing.
Tibetan Throat Singing is a type of singing where individuals are able to sing manipulate the overtones that are naturally present in the voice, producing two different tones. Some dangers of this singing is that it is harmful to your vocal chords. Worse still is the back of your throat the soft palate and pharynx which can become irritated from the air, causing swelling and soreness. It is achieved by the shaping of the mouth and the location of the tongue. No, this is not something I can train myself or anyone else to do.

  3. Tibetan or Tuvan throat singing is an overtone singing practiced by the Mongol people. The art of Mongolian throat singing is a style in which one or more pitches sound simultaneously over a fundamental pitch, producing a unique sound. Some of the dangers of the throat singing is that it can cause the disruption of respiratory regularly, which in turn leads to disruption of hemodynamics, and consequent hypoxia and hyperkalemia of organs and tissues. It is achieved by shaping your mouth and tongue. No,it is something that I don't plan to train myself and it seems dangerous and you know I got to keep my throat fresh and out of harm.
The Tibetan throat singing is very odd and strange because I don't see how some people do this. As I watched the videos, it was very annoying and I couldn't understand "Amazing Grace"until the end of the video. I can't imagine myself doing this type of singing and it is just too much. At first, I thought it is something impossible to do and singing different pitches at the same time. Overall, the videos were very annoying and confused at the same time.

  4. Tibetan throat singing is a type of singing that incorporates both drones and overtone singing. Drones are composed of one single, unbroken notes. This note gives your mind something to focus while overtone singing, which is a manipulation of the mouth and throat that brings out harmonic overtones of the natural voice that resemble a type of whistle or growl come out over the drone. Tibetan throat singing is most often practiced in Buddhist and Mongolian people. Ceremonies that incorporate this style of singing usually portraying more than one monk singing at a time, holding the lowest possible pitch.
Although the type of singing is often practiced, there are some dangers that come with performing it. Due to the increased pressure on the vocal chords, this type of singing can have a direct effect on the regular respiratory functions in addiction to a strong disruption of hemodynamics. The singing, in my opinion strongly resembles the humming performed by Buddists when their legs are crossed and they are in a peaceful state. The song is quite annoying, however once the overtones come through, this type of singing actually is quite amazing.

  5. Tibetan Throat Singing is a variant of overtone singing practiced by the Mongol people in Mongolia. The art of Tibetan Throat singing is a style in which one or more pitches sound simultaneously over a fundamental pitch, producing a weird sound. The open landscape of Mongolia allows for the sounds to carry a great distance. Most singers will travel far distances looking for the right place that has a proper environment for throat-singing. Tibetan Throat Singing can also be dangerous because if it is not done the correct way, your vocal chords can be damaged. Along with that the back of your throat the soft palate may become irritated from the air causing it to swell and/or swell. This singing can be achieved by first, clearing your throat which means coughing and drinking a few sips of water to help and sooth the scratching. Next, wheeze loudly to make sure you hear yourself. Then, block your throat tighter to rise the pitch.Lastly throat sing your own tune. To me this sounds weird, because I had never heard something like this before. It basically sounds like someone is humming or mumbling, because I really cant understand what they are singing. Tibetan Throat Singing is something that I probably couldn't teach myself without help.

  6. Tibetan Throat Singing or Tuvan Singing is a particular variant of overtone singing done by the Mongol people in Mongolia an Tuvan. There are dangers of this type of singing an there are benefits of this type of singing. The dangers of Tibetan singing are singing too far from Monophonic Music or,too far from music without chords. The benefit of Tibetan singing is,you don't see it very much today. If you can Tibetan sing you have a very outstanding talent.
Yes,Tibetan Throat singing is definitely limited.Tibetan singing can also really harm your vocal chords.Tibetan Singing sounds like a microphone when something goes wrong. What I mean is,Tibetan singing really hurts your ears. Tibetan singing is achieved by the position of you mouth an tongue.Tibetan Throat singing is a very difficult thing to do and, this is something I can not train myself to do or anyone else.

  7. Tibetan singing is a type of throat singing. It also has types of ways you can sing it. This type of singing can damage your throat and make you have a soar throat if you do not practice enough. Some danger to this method is that you might not be able to sing for awhile and it can damage your vocal cords so that you will not be able to sing for a long time. The benefits of it is that it helps you round your sounds better.

This singing sound annoying to me. The reason why I say this is because listen to this can hurt my eardrum. To me this type of singing will hurt so I think it bad. This type of singing is achieve by practing and by trying it over and over again.

  8. Tibetan throat singing is one particular variant of overtone singing practiced by the Mongol people in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, and Tuva. The dangers of throat singing are that you can strain your voice and damage your focal chords. The benefits of throat singing are that it is very rare. Tibetan throat singing is very dangerous, yet beneficial.
This type of singing is very weird and annoying to me. I'm used to listening to music that has lyrics, and throat singing doesn't. It just sounds like humming and moaning. This singing can be achieved by first, clearing your throat. Next, wheeze loudly. Then, block your throat tighter to rise the pitch. Lastly throat sing your own tune. Tibetan Throat singing is a very difficult thing to do, and i don't think you can train yourself to do it.

  9. Tibetan Throat Singing is also known as overtone singing. A singer is able to manipulate this singing by going past the vocal cords, using the air from their lungs, to make a sound through their throats, and come out of their lips to form a melody. The singer can change the tune by moving their lips to form different shapes. The only time it becomes dangerous to throat sing is when you do it incorrectly. One danger is loosing elements of your physical growth. It is not healthy to throat sing while sick because it could lead to loss of your voice (temporarily or permanently). There are also benefits to this type of singing. One being, the ability to impress others with your talent.
This singing sounds very raw. It sounds like the type of music used in a cartoon called "Avatar: The last Airbender". This only makes sense because the show is based of monks' lifestyle. Throat singing is used by monks as a form a chanting. in order to achieve this type of singing it takes years of training. I don't believe that I would be able to learn how to throat sing because I wouldn't want to put so much time and effort into something that wouldn't be entertaining for myself or other people.

  10. Tibetan throat singing is a type of overtone singing. It is when two different tones are made at the same exact time by the same person. The person is able to gain control of the overtone and produce two notes. There are pros and cons to this type of singing. Some of the cons are damaging your vocal chords and potentially losing your voice all together. There is a higher risk of these two cons if you are unaware on how to do it properly. The pro on being able to Tibetan throat sing is now you have an amazing new talent to share with everyone.

The singing sounds like a really low chant of some sort and a really high pitched whistle to me. I also think it sounded as if two people were making the notes when there was only one. This type of singing is achieved by a series of steps. The steps are: Clear your throat and drink plenty of water, Wheeze loudly to make sure you hear yourself, slowly block your throat passage and listen for a faint screeching sound, block your throat tighter to rise the pitch, Hollow out your throat to lower the pitch, but keep it blocked, and then practice until you find the tune you’re comfortable with. It is possible for me to train myself to Tibetan throat singing but I do not wish to do so because of the risks.

  11. Tibetan throat singing is singing that is a manipulation of the mouth and throat to bring out harmonic overtones of the natural voice that resemble a whistle or growl. Various ceremonies and prayers call for throat singing in Tibetan Buddhism, often with more than one monk chanting at a time, holding to the lower pitches possible in throat singing. Some dangerous stuff about it is that your vocal chords could become damaged as a result of singing this way. Something beneficial about this is that you're better than other people around because it takes skill to do something like this.
This singing sounds really weird and I don't particularly care for it. To begin to do this, you need to: clear your throat by like coughing and stuff, drink a few sips of water to help and with scratching, wheeze loud enough to where you can hear yourself then slowly block your throat passage and listen for a faint screeching sound, and other stuff. I could learn how to do this but I personally would not want to. Its weird and I could potentially hurt myself.

The Tibetan throat singing is very annoying to me and i really hate the sound of it. I l didn't enjoy listening to it because it irritated me. I couldnt hear the amazing grace in the "American Grace" throat singing video, it sounded nothing like it to me.The only video i liked, that didnt irritate me was the polyphonic overtone. I found that video very cool and interesting, that is something i would try to train myself to do!

  13. The Tibetan Throat singing, or Tuvan Throat singing is the use of overtone to produce a two pitch harmony. Using the vocal folds one can manipulate the resonance of the air flow and create a melody. Several dangers of this type of singing is laryngitis, nodules, and losing your voice completely if not trained properly. The only pro for learning this technique is making your voice sing two sounds. Unfortunately I do not recommend this type of singing unless, for you have no true reason to learn it, you wish to sing like a monk or be in a death metal band.

The singing sounds exactly like monk singing, but can be used with different types of songs. This sing though can not be achieved easily if you have no control over the vocal folds or a already trained throat singer. You can train yourself, but I don't recommend it. As I said if you are not trained by a professional you can hurt your voice.

  14. Tibetan Throat Singing is a method of singing is a form of overtone and is a method of singing two part harmony. It has been originated from South Mongolia and the singing and can be divided up into different categories(styles). Tibetan Throat Singing is used for different occasions. For example, funerals, ceremonies, and prayer. Wow,can you believe that? The dangers of throat singing is it changes the development of the throat/ voice.
The benefits of this type is being unique and different because it is seldom seen or done. I personally, would not like to try to train myself because I do no not want my vocals to be messed up in the future. This should be recommended because it is worth trying if the right training is involved. The singing sounds weird at first but nicely done at the end. This can be achieved if the vocal folds have no control and if the person has great trainer.

  15. Throat singing is one Type of overtone singing practiced by the Mongol people in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, and Tuva. Due to the increased pressure on the vocal chords, this type of singing can have a direct effect on the regular respiratory functions. Some benefits are relief from stress and anxiety, improved vision and concentration, and increases energy. It is achieved by clearing your throat, then block your throat passage to listen for a faint screeching sound, next continue to block your throat tighter to raise the pitch. Then, hollow out your throat just a tad to lower the pitch. Finally throat sing your own tune.
You can train yourself to do this type/style of singing. Personally, I would never do it or recommend it to anyone else. To me, this singing sounds like some weird ritualistic music or music that monks would sing. It can sound nice in some cases. It's weird to me because it's not normal.

It puts increased pressure on the vocal chords, making it some what dangerous because of the affect that it has on the vocal chords. You can train yourself to do this type/style of singing. The steps that are taken to complete this style of singing making me very hesitant to trying it. I just really think it is unsafe to the vocal chords, even though it is said to be cool, and can sometimes help to relieve stress. I just can't see myself doing something of this nature. I am very skeptical about the things that I do that pertain to my voice because of how much I have to use it.

  18. Tibetan Throat Singing is a very hard singing practice to master. Tibetan Throat Singing is sometimes referred to as overtone singing in which you can manipulate the overtones so that you can perform two tones at one time. It produces a therapeutic sound but if you keep it up for too long you will see a decline in lung function.
With the singing sounds like to me is a very loud buzz a lot of the time. This would take a lot of training to do but if you keep at it you will get Tibetan Throat Singing. But I would not like to try Tibetan Throat Singing.

  19. Tibetan Throat Singing, also known as harmonic singing, is a type of singing where the singer has the ability to manipulate a basic tone and produce two tones at once. It has been said that it is not dangerous. Most people recommend that if you feel any pain while in the process, you should stop. Also, they recommend that you don't get pain mixed with sensation. When trying throat singing for the first time, of course, it will feel funny and weird. Although it is said that it isn't dangerous, it has been said that as a beginner, one could harm themselves due to the lack of experience.

Personally, throat singing sounds like a harmonica. When it was first introduced to me, it seemed quite annoying. After I watched the second one, I fell in love with it. The second video had a more clear sound, which caught my attention. To achieve throat singing, you could look up tutorials on YouTube to train yourself or personally ask a professional.

  20. Tibetan throat singing is a form of overtone singing or chanting in which the singer manipulates the resonants created as air travels through the lungs and past the vocal folds to make a melody. This resonant tuning allows the singer to produce more than one pitch at a time. Throat singing can cause damage to the vocal chords and stunt the growth of one's voice. Personally, I think the higher note sounds like a whistle and the lower note sounds like a moan or some sort of alien or animal call. I believe that sometimes the lower note is too strong and prevents the upper note from being heard. You have to listen very attentively to hear both. It is achieved by practice and vocal control. This type of singing can be taught and mimicked. One can learn by taking lessons or by searching the internet for tips or videos. Personally, overtone singing interests me,but I probably would not want to learn how to do it. I would rather observe and listen to someone else do it.

  21. Tibetan throat singing is also known as overtone singing or harmonic singing. You can achieve this by changing the shape of your mouth. This allows the singer to make more than one pitch at the same time. Some of the dangers of this type of singing is it can harm your vocal chords and get soreness in your throat. Something beneficial about this is that you are more advances than the people around you because this skill is so complex.

To me, throat singing sounds like some monk doing a special religious ritual. I personally would not want to train my self to do this type of singing. I really don't like the way it sounds and I really like my voice the way it is. I don't want to harm it in any way.

  23. Tibetan Throat Singing, also known as throat singing, is a type of singing in which the singer manipulates the formants created as air travels from lungs, and past the vocal folds. The tuning allows te singer ti create apparently more than one pitch at the same time. It sounds like a human making very bass like humming while making a sort of creepy whistle. The history of throat singing foes back a long time ago. It is known thrown that not only are men able to perform this method, but women are as well.
You could train yourself to do this type of singing. However would I do try to do this?? No. There are two things you must master to be able to throat sing. They are: first, the correct shape of your mouth which includes the tongue and lips; secondly, vocalization. Some dangers of this method are not clearing your throat before starting, and not blocking your throat to rise the pitch. Some benefits are that is it let you get your voice to a place that you have never thought of. Also, it give you something cool, weird, and something to brag about to your friends.

  24. Tibetan Throat Singing, also called overtone-singing, is a range of singing styles in which a single vocalist sounds more than one pitch simultaneously by reinforcing certain harmonics (overtones and undertones) of the fundamental pitch. In some styles, harmonic melodies are sounded above a fundamental vocal drone. Some of the dangers of this singing are hurting your vocal cords. Also there can be a change in how your throat and your voice. Some of the benefits are that many people cannot achieve this type of singing but the ones who can are very different and unique. You can achieve this type of singing shaping your mouth and tongue. It would be really helpful to watch some YouTube video if you plan on trying to do this type of singing.
The singing is really interesting to me. I think it is wonderful sound to hear, but I would not go to a Tibetan Throat Singing concert. I would like to try this but I also want to keep from damage my vocal cords. Not everyone will enjoy the sounds of the singing. It all depends on how your take on music is.

  26. Tibetan throat singing can also be called overtone-singing. Mongol people practice this type of singing. Its a type of Buddhist humming! It is very unique, because not all people can control the overtone and end up producing two significant notes. It takes a special ear to hear it though. When you first listen you do not hear the other note, but when you listen to it the first time you cannot hear it, It is unique, but its very dangerous! Throat singing can very well damage your vocal chords, especially with the pressure your applying. But you cant be afraid to try it though, because its not impossible to achieve it just take time and dedication. I even think about trying it this weekand. Let's see how it goes.

  27. Tibetan throat singing is a type of overtone singing which is practiced in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia and Tuva. It is a style of singing in which two or more pitches are sung by a person, creating a unique sound. It is said that there are no dangers to this type of singing if it is done right. It is no more dangerous to your vocal chords than regular singing. If you feel pain while using this singing technique, you should immediately stop, but you need to make sure that it is real pain not the sensation of it.

Tibetan throat singing sounds pretty to me. It took me a long time to hear the high note that sounds like a whistle, but once I heard it, I knew what I was looking for and could hear it almost every time. This type of singing is achieved by lots of practice. It can be learned yourself through some ways such as searching for videos on YouTube. It is easy to learn it wrong so some people suggest getting a professional to train you. Even though this type of singing doesn’t affect your vocal chords or damage it, I would not try it because there would be no use of this singing for me. Also it would take time to learn it when I could be learning and practicing more for my normal singing.

  28. Titeban throat singing that is overtones with two differenttones, making one unique sound. Titeban throat singing originated from the Mongolian monks. This type of singing can be achieved by the singers using overtones with their natural voices and positioning their mouth and tongue a certain way. This singing has its benefits and harm.

One way its beneficial because its unique and different.Another way its beneficial is by the are able to perform this unique talent. One way it can be harmful is that the singer can lose his or her voice. Another it's harmful is because it can cause neurological damage. This singing is weird but unique to me.

  29. Tibetan Throat Singing or overtone-singing is a range of singing styles in which a single vocalist sounds more than one pitch. It is done simultaneously by reinforcing certain harmonics (overtones and undertones) of the fundamental pitch. The Mongolians sung this way for entertainment. This is a dangerous way of singing if you are not careful because you can damage your vocal chords. There really isn't any benefits except that it is a different type of singing.
It sounds like a woman giving birth, specifically when she is pushing the baby out. It is done by the shape of your mouth and putting your tongue on top of your soft pallet. 30. Tibetan throat singing is a type of overtone singing, with two different notes, which is practiced in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia and Tuva. This method of singing does great harm by damaging the vocal chords and stunting the growth of one's voice. A benefit of it is that not many people are able to accomplish this great skill, since it is very difficult. It took me a minute to truly hear the two pitches at first, then once I listened closely it sounded to me as if the top note was almolst as if adolescent and pure and the bottom pitch sounded like a groan. This singing can be achieved by clearing your throat, wheezing loudly, then by blocking your throat tighter to rise the pitch. Lastly throat sing your own tune. This is not a skill one can teach themselves how to do.

  32. Titeban Throat Singing is the ability to/ act of making two pitches at the same time -- also known as overtone singing. The benefits of Titeban Throat Singing would be having this ability to harmonize with yourself! Another pro for this would be experiencing different styles of singing. Unfortunately, there are some dangers that comes along with this singing. For instance, a singer can damage their vocal chords and vocal folds.
The sound of the Titeban Throat Singing is very different than what I am accustomed to listening to. Titeban Throat Singing sounds like a bass singer harmonizing with a soprano one vocal range. This singing known as Titeban Throat Singing is very difficult to master and can be very dangerous! The way to achieve this singing would be to form your mouth in such a way that your tongue is fully on the pallet and push air from your nostrils with a small hole for a high pitch sound. Titeban Throat Singing is something that you can train yourself to do but it should not be attempted without supervision!
