Covers
Covers are performances of songs by an artist other than the
original performer. Most covers are done to popular music, but any song can be
considered a cover. Sometimes, the cover performance is better than the
original. For this week, choose a video to watch and discuss why the cover is
better than the original. If you feel that the original is better, tell why you
think this is true. All posts must be made by 11:59 pm on Friday, September 22,
2017. No late posts are accepted. Please verify that your comments have posted.
No exceptions will be made for computer errors.
I have chosen the song Rise Up by Andra Day. The person who is doing the cover is Lynnea M.. The reason I feel like this cover is better than the original is because its raw and uncut and it sound better than her. The originality is there and that gives her extra points in my book. I also feel like she hits the high notes smoothly and with ease. Although Andra Day sounds good in her she still have the professionals tinkering with her voice to sound better and I feel Layanna didn't have that and still sounds better. This is why I feel like this cover is better is better than Andra's original song.

The song I chose is Listen by Beyonce. The person who is doing the cover is Melanie Amaro. She did this cover in the show X-Factor. In this case I feel as if that both performances are great in their own ways. The cover by Melanie was just like the song when Beyonce was singing it. She hit every high note and every run in the song. The performance itself was great. She had everyone get on their feet to applaud her. You can tell that she put her heart into this song.

The song I chose is Redbone by Childish Gambino. The cover is done by a lady named Jatarra. I feel as though her cover was so good. She did be better than C. Gambino. Her runs she were smooth and sweet. She is a very talented vocalist. You could hear the passion in her voice, and hear the emotion too as she sung. I replayed her cover multiple times. In all, I believe her cover was better than the original song by Gambi's.

I enjoy listening to covers because sometimes they are better than the original; The cover I chose fits that category. The cover I chose was "Rehab" (done originally by Amy Winehouse) sung by an A Capella group called Straight No Chaser. This cover is better than the original to me because I enjoy the vocals more. The group put so much energy into the song and the lead vocalist is passionate while singing. It is clear that the group puts 110% effort into making the song enjoyable.

I like listening to different covers of songs that I think are good because they all have their own unique spin. The song I chose was "The Weekend" by SZA covered by JamieBoy. It's hard to say which one is better because he samples her song a little and uses a lot of his own lyrics, but overall I think that the cover is better than the original. He has a great voice and hits every note perfectly. I like the cover more because you don't have all of the post editing adlibs, which makes it sound much clearer and smoother.

The song that I chose is "Oui" by Jeremih. The person singing the cover is Keke Wyatt. I love Keke Wyatt's voice. She has so much control over her vocal chords. She knows exactly when to do a run. She never does too much to me. I honestly like this version of the song better than the original. I like listening to other people's interpretation of songs.

I chose the song close to you by Carpenters. The cover was done by Karen. The reason I chose this song is because I recently discovered it. I believe the cover is better than the original. The original had a piano and brass instruments for the beat. The cover has a guitar, violin and soft drums which makes the song sound sweet and lovely. The original had a weird singing pattern as where the cover by Karen is very smooth and easy to listen to. Both were great, but the cover brings out the soft sweet sound that I believe the Carpenters where trying to accomplish in the original.

The song I chose was “My Man” by Tamar Braxton with the cover sung my Asia Major. Asia Major is an YouTuber who makes covers to different songs with her beautiful voice. I specially chose this cover because I love the way she takes her time singing it and how she shows emotion and puts her all into it. When I originally listened to “My Man” by Tamar Braxton, I couldn’t understand some of the words that she was saying. However, when I listened to Asia singing the song, I understood every thing she was saying; words and all. You can tell that Asia loves singing with a passion and that when she sings, she feels free. So with further ado I present: “My Man” cover my Asia Major. Hope you enjoy!!

ReplyDeleteThe cover i chose was Mary did you know -Pentatonix
I am in love with the harmony of their voices! The original Mary did you know I think, personally was kind of bland. Pentatonix added parts, solos, harmonies, ECT. that made the song sound so different but beautiful! They sound so professional and they have so much passion when they sing. It's like you can almost feel the emotion through their singing. So overall I believe the cover is better than the original song.

ReplyDeleteThe cover I chose was "Get You" by Daniel Caesar. One day I came across a girl named Marylou Villegas doing the cover of this song. The song was okay when song by the original person. When Marylou song the cover I thought she did excellent, actually better than Daniel. The fact that a girl/different tone of voice song the song is what made it excel and even better than the original. She substituted the bad inappropriate terms from the original with good appropriate terms in the cover. She has raw talent because she was able to blow the cover and sing it way better than the person who established it, which means a lot in an Artist. Enjoy!!!

I chose the cover of Hallelujah originally by Leonard Cohen. The cover is by Pentatonix. I have loved them ever since i heard their first cover. They are the best acapella group in my opinion. Their voices blend so well together. They are all very strong voices. They also always add their own twist to each cover which is really nice so they can make them their own. If you enjoy acapella they are the group for you!

I chose the cover of Tenderness originally by Otis Redding. The cover of the song was by Mercedes from glee. She is a great and powerful singer . She controls her voice well. She also makes the song her own and shows a lot of emotion during the song. http://youtu.be/RRbR_aC_ptY

I really enjoy listening to Alice Kristiansen' s cover of "Somebody Else" by The 1975. She has a beautiful and gentle voice that in my opinion only adds to the song. I honestly prefer her version of the recording over the original, which probably sounds unusual. I love the fact that she only uses the piano creating an acoustic and intimate sound and vibe. Her version of the song didn't stray to far from from the original but she did spice it up in her own way and making it hers.

One of my favorite covers is "Mad World" by Jasmine Thompson originally sung by Tears of Fear. This song is beautifully sung by anyone, but it is something about Jasmine's voice that makes it so much more heart felt. You can hear the raw and pure yet subtle emotion as she sings. Accommodated by the piano playing soft keys it's hard not to feel anything from listening to this song. It is sad and relatable to soo many things which is why it will forever be one of my favorites.

One of my favorite songs is “Weak” by SWV. The cover I listened to was by KeKe Palmer. I thought the cover was better than the original because I’ve never seen another artist do a cover of someone else’s song and it surprised me. I say that because of the fact that SWV are good singers, I just personally believe that KeKe Palmer did a way better job than them

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite songs as of now is the cover to PnB Rock- Selfish by Queen. I liked the idea and certain verses in the original song but I did not entirely favor this song at all until I discovered this cover. Normally, I dislike covers and favor the original song, but not anymore. Queen's cover is a female version to the song and her lyrics are very relatable from a girl's standpoint. The original song uses the same melody and lyrics throughout the whole song. PnB Rock repeats the same phrases over and over and the song has no differentiation to it. Queen's cover is the exact opposite. She uses few lyrics of the original song but does make use of the hook. She does not repeat her verses repetitiously and does change the song's beat occasionally. I love this song and this is the best cover I have seen yet.

There is one cover for the song "Stairway to Heaven", which has
ReplyDeletewho I think is the original members of Led Zeppelin sitting in the balcony of the house/audience area. DeleteThe song I chose for this week’s blog post is “A Song For You” originally be Donny Hathaway . The song is really beautiful once you actually listen to the lyrics but in my opinion he wasn’t feeling the song enough to make his audience/listeners feel it. As some say, “you have to love your song for your audience to love your song” that’s exactly how I felt listening to the song. As I continued to search for better versions , I soon found one by Kevin Ross. He’s an amazing singer and he’s also great because he can do riffs & runs. In the video, Kevin played the piano while he was singing which as many people know is not an easy task to do. Many people don’t know about Kevin Ross but some do , I believe he’ll go far because of how he started so humbly.

ReplyDeleteThe cover I chose is FiestyKay singing Love Drought by Beyoncé. The video is only a good 50 seconds long but it sounds so good. Kay's voice is so beautiful. She chose Beyoncé's song to do a cover and thats a tough act to follow but she sung it so well. Of Course Beyoncé did it better its her song but Kay did an amazing job too. The sound doesn't sound force and her runs are so smooth and sweet. I just wish the video was longer but overall she has the best Love Drought cover to me.

The cover I chose was Alexa Goddard singing "Someone Like You" by Adele. This is one of my favorite covers done by Alexa. I think Alexa sounded better than Adele. I think Alexa's voice is nice. Alexa sounds like she is bringing her passion into the song is making it her own. Enjoy!

The cover song that i selected was " I Will Survive" originally sung by, Gloria Gaynor. The cover artist was Demi Lovato. Personally i enjoyed the cover rather than the original, to me Demi just sang with lots more enthusiasm and spirit. On Demi's, the tempo was more upbeat and lively. She sung with lots more expression and attitude. The words are meaningful and need to be heard and understood. I feel as though Demi accomplished this while bringing some more life to the piece. This is why I believe that the cover song by Demi Lovato was better than the original by Gloria Gaynor.

The cover I chose is one from Trey and Ar'mon. These brothers do covers of songs from all genres and mash them up. The mash up I chose is Bodak Yellow, LOVE, and Love Galore. They never seize to surprise with their videos, but this one I felt on another level. One of the reasons could be that these are my favorite songs at the moment. Another reason could be the boys ability to move from one key to another, from one range to another, and the ability to add in runs and such at the right moment. The songs alone are great, but I think Trey and Ar'mon did it better because they found a new way to connect music perfectly. They unlocked new doors to the music world. The music industry should really take notes from them.

I chose a cover to the song "A Thousand Miles." This song was originally sung by Vanessa Carlton, but the video I chose is a cover sung by Linus Bruhn on The Voice. In my opinion, his cover is better than the original version. He has an amazing voice and I love the way he makes this song his own. HE has become a very successful singer since this cover and he continues to make covers and post them on Youtube. He is becoming a sensation and has received thousands of followers. His cover is better because he is soooo enthusiastic! Plus he's hot :)

The song I chose as cover song is "Diamond and Pearls," by Prince. The cover is done by none other than the wonderfully gifted Keke Wyatt. When she sung the song she kept it as close the original melody with her own added flavor. Her vocal dexterity was shown throughout the sung with her added embellishments to the melody. However, she sung with so much emotion, as always, that you can tell how inspired she was by Prince. In my personal opinion this is one of the best Prince covers to ever be done.

I chose the song "Must Be Nice, originally done by Lyfe Jennings. And the cover I'm writing about is the one by a young girl by the name of Myaa TheGreatest. She did her cover to the instrumental of "Treat Me Like Somebody," by the singer Tink, and it flowed very well. I especially like the way that she transitions from phrase to phrase. Her voice almost angelic in a sense, because she sings lightly and doesn’t over sing. I honestly don’t specifically know why I like this cover so much but I know that I do.

The cover that I chose is by Christopher Maloney. Christopher Maloney performed the song " The Rose". Christopher has that type of voice that just gives you the chills. I mean u could feel the meaning and the connection he had with the song just by the way he was singing. Some people did not like the shakiness in his voice but I loved it. To me the shakiness just made the song even better. All in all Christopher did an amazing job.

I chose the song "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. The cover is done by a young music artist named VedoTheSinger. It is my favorite cover because he sung the song with great emotion and his runs were very angelic. I've heard many covers of this song but this one is the best by far !

I chose the song "Killing Me Softly With His Song" by Roberta Flack. The cover I'm writing about is by Fugees with Lauryn Hill voice. She is a very good singer you might remember her from the movie "Sister Act". Her voice has a soulful feel to it. I like this cover more than the original singer, but it may just be because I grew up listening to her music as well. She just adds a different sound to her voice that makes it unique.

The song I chose was "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. An group called "AHMIR R&B" did a Group Cover. The cover was actually better than the original song. The melody and harmonic styles were beautiful. The guitar in the background was giving the song a extra personality. I've heard the original song before and it was great but the cover of the song was more epic.

For this week's blog post I chose "Flashlight" by Jessie J. The Bardon Bellas', from Pitch Perfect, cover of this is song is better to me personally. Anna Kendrick's lead vocals makes the song sweeter and personal. The cover is also better to me because i like that movie and the story the song has in the movie. The song in general is great.

The cover that I decided was a mashup of the songs "Drunk Texting, Nobody, Love in this Club, Superhuman, and End of time." These songs were recreated by this brother duo Armon and Trey along with the help with their friend Queen. They all are youtubers who make music and it sounds really nice. All of their voices work really well together and they sound amazing. I think their combination of these songs are better than the original songs because of the order they put the songs and it was also based on who sung which part. Their harmonies were wonderful and if you heard the original songs then you think of how they kept the same concept but changed how they showcased it. I have never heard the song "Superhuman" by Chris Brown and after hearing it, it made me look it up and listen to it over and over. These three friends really sing well together and I hope that they continue to make music and do covers together.

The song I chose was "Hymn for the Weekend" by Coldplay and Beyonce, but is sung by the the wonderful sisters, Chloe and Halle. I like this version over the original, because you get to hear their voices and the use of the beat pad and guitar really complimented both their voices and style giving it an earthy vibe .And also their harmonies were precise and clean.

The cover that I have chosen to present is actually a mash-up/medley of three songs: iSpy by KYLE, T-shirt by Migos, and Isn't She Lovely. This cover is by Alex Aiono ft two of his friends. I chose this song because the harmonious virtue of it really appealed to me. If you listen to each one of these songs separately, they sound totally different. The fact that they brought these three songs together and killed it was really amazing. I really like this song and I hope you do too MEW.

ReplyDeleteThe cover I chose is Empire's " You're so beautiful" done by Ar'mon and Trey. I like this cover because it gives the song a faster tempo and different harmonies. It is only two of them singing so its sounds really good together. They also add their own twist to the song which makes it even better. I think this is better than the original because they did what they wanted with the notes and it made a big difference.

The song cover I chose was "I Will Always Love You" by Ashly Williams and sung originally by Whitney Houston. Mrs.Willams did an amazing job with the song, and I honestly loved the way she sung it. Her voice portrayed power, yet was soft and gentle. Her words flowed like calm waters and her facial expressions showed exactly how she was feeling. Her performance was dedicated to her deceased mother, so she had alot of emotions that helped her sing the song with all her heart. This overall was a powerful performance and I honestly have to say that I like the original and Mrs.Williams version both equally.

One of my favorite covers is from Pentatonix with Jason Derulo in which they performed Shai’s If I Ever Fell in Love Again. I enjoyed the different harmonies in the song and how each part correlated with each other. I also enjoyed the soloist parts and I thought that they really shined through during those parts. I absolutely believe that this version is better than the original however there are some things that I think could be better on the song. However, this song remains as one of my most favorite songs of all time.

The song cover I chose was “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince. This cover was done by BeyoncĂ© during her Formation world tour as a tribute for Prince around the time he passed. I prefer this cover over the original because BeyoncĂ© perfomed this song with more emotion than it originally had. However, she does include the same energy Prince would have when he performed it.

ReplyDeleteThe cover I chose was Khalid’s “LOCATION", covered by Samantha Harvey. I think that this cover is better than the original for multiple reasons, she is very much into the song, and her voice sounds better than Khalid’s to me. I really like the way she manipulates it! That is what really made me fall in love with this version. She executed this song perfectly in my eyes, from all the runs she did, to the octave range that she has. I will forever love it.

The song I chose was "What's The Use of Feeling Blue?" from Steven Universe. The cover was done by insaneintherainmusic. I didn't like one version more than the other, as there were things I liked about both. For example, I liked the vibrato in the cover artist's voice, but I also liked the strong passion in the original artist's voice. I liked the added harmony near the middle in the original, as the cover artist did not add that. I like the sounds of the instrumental in the cover, as it really remakes the entire song and makes it unique. I feel like the cover artist had strong passion for the song, and could truly feel the words of the character engraving in her mind. The original singer was also very passionate, as one can tell by the way she drags her voice up and down at some points, and grows softer as does her character's dialogue. I really liked both performances; I believe both singers had great voices, warm feeling, and sweet sound.

The song I chose is “X” by 21 Savage. There is this group name VanJess that covers this song. VanJess is a group composed of two sisters who often do covers to popular songs and make them their own. This song is usually fast and up beat but their version is slower and more on the R&B side. VanJess has covered a ride variety of songs and recently started to make their own songs. The song I chose for the Cover Song Assignment was 'Hallelujah' by Pentatonix. The song was originally done by Leonard Cohen but the version sung in the movie Strek is the most famous. The cover in shrek was sung by Rufus Wainwright. There have been many famous covers done for this song but my absolute favorite was done by Pentatonix. The cover by Pentatonix splits the song into different parts and combine melodies that go perfectly together.

The cover I have chosen is "Dear Theodosia" by Trey Mclaughlin, Jamal Moore, and Arthur Chapman. The original was done by the original cast of Hamilton. In this case I think the original is only slightly better than the cover. I think this because the original music is just a work of genius. It not only sounds amazing, but Lin-Manuel Miranda did something no one has ever thought to do, he combined history with Modern music genres. Despite this it is such a feat to see this work reimagined so beautifully. The harmonies in the cover are heavenly and the mood of the song is really felt. It is the co-existing of the same piece of music in different styles that reveals the power a piece of music can hold.

I have chosen the song "The Weekend" by SZA. This song is covered by a youtuber named Asia major. In this cover Asia major performed a raw and uncut version of "The Weekend". The song I chose to get a cover for was Chris Brown's New Flame. I like this song because the beat and the smooth talking words. The cover is from an artist named VedoTheSinger. His cover sounded very well but it was not better than the original. In the cover there is way more auto-tune used than in the orginal. Auto-tune is nice but I believe the true vocals in the music are shown better when it is less. The artist although does have a nice voice from what I can here, and has a decent cover.I enjoyed hearing his different runs and small changes to the Chris Brown song.
